I received an e-mail today from Eduardo, who has been recommended here numerous times as a guide (as well as an escort) by satisfied M4Mers. The behavior he describes does no credit to the perpetrator, and I urge other readers to avoid doing anything similar. Not only will it ruin the Rio scene for other M4Mers, it will also probably ruin the perpetrator's own holiday, because it won't take long at all for word to get around among the other boys, resulting in the perp being shunned for the rest of his stay. Assuming nothing worse happens. These are nice guys, but they live in a society where it's not uncommon for people to take the law in their own hands (because the regular legal system barely functions) and settling their own debts when they've been ripped off or otherwise screwed. You really, REALLY don't want to find out how that works in a country like Brazil!

My translation of Eduardo's e-mail follows:

"About two months ago I got an e-mail from someone from M4M, saying he was coming to Brazil and would like my assistance while he was here. I responded with my rates, hours, etc. I usually ask a client to confirm his arrival and that he really wants my services. Usually a week before the dates agreed on I e-mail to reconfirm our arrangements. In this particular case, I confirmed and reconfirmed that this person wanted my services, as I usually do.

When this person arrived, he never called. I waited and waited and finally called his hotel. I was able to get his room number and finally got through to him. He asked me to call back later. I did, and he took down my phone number, because he hadn't written it down before (I had sent it to him in my e-mails). He said he'd call me the next day. I waited for his call, and when I didn't hear from him I called him once again. He asked me to call him the following day to show him Copacabana and maybe downtown Rio. I got up the next day to be able to meet him. At the time he specified I called him again, and he said 'I'm with a boy and he's going to take me around to the tourist spots. Maybe on my next trip!'

I felt like I was treated with a complete lack of respect, because this guy didn't take me or my work seriously. Perhaps I'm not a formally certified guide, but I'm dedicated and I do my best so that everyone is satisfied with my work. This was particularly upsetting because I had two other clients arriving from London and I had to turn them down because I had already confirmed my work with this other guy from M4M. Business has been very slow in the past months, and I really need the work, and I can't afford to lose clients because of people failing to keep their word."

And there you have it. If the guilty party is reading this, it might be a good idea to get ahold of Eduardo and make up to him, BIG TIME! Eduardo doesn't deserve being treated like this, the rest of us on M4M who treat the guys respectfully don't need this, and the jerk doesn't need what he may reap from such behavior! Enough said!

I entirely agree with Tri's comments. Eduardo is a wonderful young man who deserves better treatment than this. I had the good fortune to employ his translation services for a week in May--the trip was much better thanks to Eduardo. Eduardo told me about another incident that struck me as ill mannered. A M4Mer hired him as a guide and never took Eduardo with him on the tram to Christ the Redeemer or gondola to Sugar Loaf. I found that many of the guides and escorts have NEVER been to these attractions as they are much too expensive. I thought it was great to have Eduardo along as well as Mozart and Fabio on a prior trip. For the small expense involved I was saddened that this occured.

I concur with all of the above. I had the privilege of meeting and spending time with Eduardo. He truely is a good person. While Brazilians in general are friendly and helpful people, Eduardo goes that step further to make sure you are comfortable and enjoying yourself. He cooked a great Lunch for El Paso, as well as my companion and I. (Thanks Eduardo a really great meal:9 ). We all need to remember that the next time we go to Rio, we must get together with Eduardo as a friend as well as a Guide. His service's are what pay for his Rent, food etc, just because we now know where 117, 202 and the other sauna's are, does not mean we no longer need Eduardo. He was good enough to show us around, give us advise and yes solicit those incredible men on our behalf:). So please treat Eduardo with the kindness and friendliness that he deserve's.

Communication is important between friends......

Eduardo,

I did not have a chance to call you before I left and thank you for all of your help during my trip. I just arrived back home here in Los Angeles a few minutes ago and wanted to let you know how much I appreciated meeting you and many thanks for introducing me to Alexander. To all the M4Mers, Eduardo is a fine young man and was very helpful to all of us during our recent soiree. Please treat him well when you visit RIO.

Chorus of Praise

I wish to add to the chorus of praise for Eduardo. It seemed as though everytime I turned around, Eduardo was assisting someone. His style is relaxed, smiling and gracious, while making things happen.

Thank you !! :D
