The scene in Uruguay is low key; it's a very small country where everyone knows everyone else, so discretion is important. Still, Montevideo is a large city and there's some gay life. For escorts, your best bet is to comb the classifieds of El País, the dominant daily, looking for headings like "Relax" or "Acompañantes" or "Servicios Personales." El País is on-line, at http://www.diarioelpais.com (Don't get it confused with the leading Madrid newspaper of the same name.) If you use the search feature within the message center for "Uruguay" or "Montevideo," you should also find a few references.

 

Montevideo is charming and pleasant, the people are very nice, and you'll enjoy your stay there. It's kind of a small-scale, laid-back version of B.A. Very attractive drive along the riverfront (Las Ramblas) through a variety of appealing neighborhoods. Also, some nice parks. This time of year can be chilly (it's winter) so dress as if you're going to be in San Francisco, with layers you can shed if it warms up when the sun's out. Have fun, and report back on what you find!

Daniel, many thanks for your really useful posting about Montevideo, its escorts and its gay scene. You've certainly given M4Mers some great reasons for including a trip to Montevideo when they visit the River Plate region!

 

Uruguayans, in general, are very charming and sweet. Much mellower than the Argentines across the river! Uruguayans also seem to be closer to the Brazilians in their attitudes towards sex between men. Possibly this may be attributable to the fact that Uruguay was once a province of Brazil, and also because Uruguay has had a determinedly secular government for most of its history as an independent nation, with rigid separation of church and state. For a small country, there seems to be quite a bit going on, between Montevideo and the summer scene in Punta del Este (mainly during the "season" in Jan. - Feb. when Punta is jammed with vacationing upper class Argentines). There's also a bit of a year-round scene in Maldonado, the older, more established town adjoing Punta where most of the Uruguayans who work in Punta live. There's cruising at night in the area near the main square in Maldonado. It's all low-key, but it's there!
