The other evening I went to the archives to reacclimate myself with certain terminology of a sexual nature that's used in the saunas and in the privacy of your own lodging or a sex motel in Brazil. What I found was a limited list of words; previously I read and printed what Trilingual had written, but presently it's buried in the myriad of pages at this particular forum. Gentlemen-- will you kindly repeat what you previously wrote, i.e. "You are very, very hot!" "I want you to fuck me hard!" "Did you come?" Write what you deem we at this site would need when we venture to saunas in Rio and Salvador where English is not spoken too readily or easily. Obrigado!:p :9 :p

This sounds like it could be a FAQ thread! I'm visiting in the tropical Midwest at the moment, but if I get time I'll scout around and see what I can find. If someone else beats me to it, please start a new FAQ thread called: "Portuguese Vocabulary for Saunas/Escorts." Let's try to limit it to what Berlitz won't teach you.

BTW, I do recommend the Berlitz phrase books for those who are new to Brazil and the Portuguese-speaking world. They're packed with useful phrases and have a basic bilingual dictionary in the back. They're also a handy size for stuffing in a pocket or fanny pack.

I am really interested in learning some Portuguese to make my life easier when I go there next time... and I would appreciate the suggestions and tips from some more experienced M4M!

Tanx!

A number of M4Mers have reported being very pleased with the Pimsleur system (be sure you get Brazilian Portuguese). In the U.S. I've seen them on sale at Borders and Barnes & Noble. The introductory set runs about $19.95. A more comprehensive course is more expensive.

While you're in Brazil you can take Portuguese classes. Carlo can set you up with a private tutor, or, depending on your time availability, you could sign up for a formal course at a language school like IBEU. A tutor is a good way to while away otherwise idle morning hours during your trip. You might even be able to find a tutor who will go to the beach with you in the morning, so you can kill two birds with one stone!

go to mixbrasil.uol.com.br/id/glossar.htm and you will find a whole multipage glossary of Brazilian gay lingo. The only problem is that it is completely in Portuguese, so you have to have some proficiency already. But you should be able to figure some of it out. They even have a separate page of words with African origins that are used by the black drag queens.

I also bought a great book in Brazil by Luzia Caminha Machado da Costa called "Vocabulàrio Portugues-Ingles Ingles-Portugues Giria Expressões Proverbios" that translates the slang expressions of each language into comparable expressions in the other language. A lot of sexual territory is covered. I don't know if it would be easy to locate in the USA. The ISBN # is: 85-902636-1-4. Hope this helps.

If you can maneuver your way through some Portuguese, MixBrasil is an essential resource because it's the largest gay site in Brazil (and maybe all of Latin America). Some of its resources (like the photo galleries) are reserved for paying subscribers of UOL (which sponsors MixBrasil). However, much of the site is free, including it's gay guides (roteiros).

UOL seems to be a joint venture between Folha de S. Paulo, the biggest newspaper in SP (and in Brazil, as I recall) and the Abril publishing group, which puts out Veja and many other magazines, as well as the Guia 4 Rodas guidebooks. They're kind of like AOL, and are the biggest ISP in Brazil, among other things.
