Well thanks to many of the posters on this board, I am preparing for my first trip to Brazil. I will be visiting some smaller towns along the historical "Gold Route" during my first week. Then I'll be in Rio the week of 27 July. Then I'll split the last week between Salvador and Sao Paulo. Sure, the guys at the saunas are exciting to think about but- wow! From the reading I'm doing, the history and culture of Brazil is so interesting. And the music...! This shold be one pleasurable trip!

So whats the scene in the "winter?" Any other M4M'ers plan to visit then? Any information on the gay scene and saunas in Salvador?- didn't see anything under FAQ. Thanks in advance for any info or advice.

"...the history and culture of Brazil is so interesting. And the music......! This should be one pleasurable trip!"

Yes, and meaningful, too in a variety of ways!

Trilingual has alluded to the beauty, the history, the culture, the art, etc...in his many posts here. He's also given us references to books to read....etc. Along with all that has been mentioned-- we've also been steeped in the adventures of escorts and the saunas since this board is dubbed as such!

Have a beaut trip (as the Aussies would say)! Become ecstatic and invigorated, and please write to us about your experiences; I also like to live and/or perhaps relive my experiences from those of others.:) :)

RE: School's Out for Summer... So let's see a Brazilian...

Now, I'm not trying to cause a ruckus, but why is it that boys who work the streets and trooms in the states are called "whores", "hustlers" and "male prostitutes" but those who do it in saunas in Brazil are called "escorts"? Just curious.

Isn't this an "escort" review/discussion site? If these guys really are considered by the client to be an escort, then why not give names/post reviews and if not, then make some recommendations in the street hustler forum?

It seems that all sexual encounters discussed in this thread are limited to the sauna boys, who have the same modus operandi as street hustlers in the USA, which is multiple quickies for low rates in public areas. Do they have escort sites down there, and if so, why don't we ever see experiences with those types of escorts posted here?

As stated above, this is not a criticism, just a general "want to know".

Also, I don't know why this forum isn't just called Brazilian escorts, as the threads about escorts from Mexico, central America and other SA countries are very, very few. Don't any posters have anything to report from those places?

Although Brazil sounds like a beautiful place to visit with a lot to offer, I wish we could hear about other places such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Aruba, Mexico, Costa Rica, etc. :)

As someone who has posted alot here, I have never referred to them as escorts, I always refer to them as "boys" or sauna boys" or "rent boys" as that is what they refer to themselves as. I seem to remember quite a while back, Ax, mentioned that he thought referring to them as "boys" was demeaning. but they do prefer that. As far as comparing them to street hustlers, the difference is they are inside not on the street and you are not having sex in a public place, you go to a room that you have rented very similiar to a motel(cheap)room. Much more comparable to a Brothel or similiar to Villa Gianni in London but with a bar/food and sauna. There is also a very social atmosphere, where after/between encounters you are sitting drinking with your friends and socializing for several hours. Come on done this October and join us, we can show you much better then explain it!

As far as the other countries go, there is not anywhere near the hustler/escort/sauana boy, what ever you want to call it, scene anywhere comparable in numbers to what is in Brazil. There is escorts in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City and Aculpulco, also Costa Rica. Surprisingly, Puerto Rico doesn't have near the number of hustlers/escorts you would expect(considering how many P.R.'s are doing that in NYC)

As Far as calling this Brazil escorts, instead of South of the Border, Fine by me!

RE: School's Out for Summer... So let's see a Brazilian...

Another reason the Brazilian sauna guys are called "escorts" is that they themselves also call themselves that, as do the owners of the establishments where they ply their trade. On the whole, I don't use the terms "whore," "male prostitute" or "hustler" in this context because they're pejorative and demeaning. Since I don't think there's anything intrinsically improper or immoral about commercial sex, I see no reason to use those terms. In Brazil and many other countries commercial sex is also not illegal, as it is in the U.S., where out attitudes about it are also colored by our Puritan cultural and legal heritage. On occasion, I've used the words "whore" or "hustler," myself, but when I have I deliberately meant to be pejorative about someone who has no ethics, or who is a rip-off artist. By and large, they've been the exception. Most of my experiences with guys at the saunas in Brazil (and this is echoed by other posters here) have been fine, and the guys have been perfectly honest, responsible and professional, which makes them "escorts" in my book!

Besides "escorts", common non-pejorative Brazilian terms for sauna boys and other escorts are "boy," "garoto de programa" and "acompanhante." "Miché" has the same pejorative sense in Portuguese that "hustler" has in English, and I wouldn't suggest calling one of these guys a "miché" to his face, although you do hear the expression "sauna com michés," or "sauna with hustlers" used.

I think Tomcal has explained why there's so much more here about Brazil than other destinations: there's just so much more activity in Brazil than elsewhere in Latin America. However, there have been numerous postings about other countries and cities, and if you're interested in reading about them use the "search" function within the Message Center to find them. Also, few of our posters seem to have used the escort agencies in Brazil. Many of their operators don't speak English, which makes it more difficult to set up dates if you're a foreign visitor. The agencies also are more expensive than the saunas, and the quality of the guys is no better than what you'll find at the saunas. Once most visitors experience the quality, selection and prices at the saunas, they quickly forget about the agencies. However, the saunas aren't everyone's cup of tea, and some of our readers have used the agencies to meet guys. Again, you just have to read through the postings and reviews to see who hired through an agency and what they're experiences were.

Getting back to the original posting in this thread, use the search function within the Message Center to search for "Salvador" and/or "Bahia." M4Mers have been there recently and have posted about their experiences. Also go to http://www.guiagaybrasil.com and click on "cidades/cities" for a comprehensive guide to many Brazilian cities, including the saunas.

RE: School's Out for Summer... So let's see a Brazilian...

In response to VHawk's query-- I've seen two escorts from Apollus' agency in RIo and have written reviews about each one.

Some months ago--Artur from SP introduced us to his site; I saw him in LA aka Carlo Cox and wrote a review. I did not write about the boys in the saunas whom I met because of the short-lived situation. These guys are NOT on the streets, thus why refer to them as hustlers? An acceptable term to me would be sauna boy or guy. I hope this answers your question in part.

I'd appreciated this as a separate thread instead of including it here when one of our fellow respondents asked questions about Salvador,Bahia and the sauna scene...

I looked at the link and the hotel looks very nice, but I'm curious as to why you believed it to be gay. There's nothing that I saw in either the Portuguese or English parts that referenced anything gay. It's also a bit outside the city, which could be very relaxing, but doesn't terribly, how shall I say, "festive." SF Traveler

RE: School's Out for Summer... So let's see a Brazilian...

Dick nyc,

I've plan to visit Salvador and Rio around the 1st of September. In searching for a hotel in Salvador, I discovereed the web-site of the Hotel Largo e Mar. It seems attractive and the prices are almost too good to believe ($12-15 per night). The one drawback, but for me a big one, is that the hotel is located 40 km from the center of Salvador. It is not easily accessible to the saunas or other locals where the 'boys' hang out.

I've contacted Carlo Romanus since supposedly he now has contacts in Salvador, but as yet he has not responded with any suggestions. I did book the Atlantico Copacabana in Rio through him at a rate less than I paid during my first visit this past February.

I have followed the recommndation of fellow poster xchris from Italy and made a reservation at the Hotel Praia Mar. Since the response from the hotel only affirmed the reservation request and did not state the cost, I'm not certain if I'll keep the reservation. If you check out the info that xchris provides be careful because the link given is to a Hotel Praia Mar in another part of Brazil.

I sent CarloRIo an email via his inbox at this site; he responded within three days with my reservation for the Atlantico in October. I will contact him later for additional reservations in the other places where I plan to be. Don't become discouraged. Right now he's probably concentrating on the big event which will take place in Sao Paulo during Gay Pride next week.

Unfortunately--I will not be amongst the celebrants-- maybe another time---and year!

Well thanks for some good info- plus some interesting side-conversation! I did find some posting about Salvador that were helpful from about a year or so ago. Any more current info would be appreciated. Also, specifically, any info, ideas, events, other M4M visits around the week of 27 July-3 August?

More info on Salvador

Dear M4Mers,

Here I am in the largest South American city for the biggest Pride Parade in Latin America.

I must apologize for not having been quick on replying some your requests but this week has been particularly hectic as we took 48 visitors to São Paulo.

As for Salvador here are my recommendations of places to stay. If you want to stay in the city close to the "movement" stay at Monte Pascoal Hotel it's a 4 star hotel. If you to stay a bit farther stay on Golden Star in Pituba. They are both close to the beach.

I would only go to Lagoa and Mar, if I really had a hot company to go with... Unless it's not worth. But gentlemen be aware that gay life in Salvador is not as sophisitcated as it's in Rio or São Paulo. To my understanding there is only 1 sauna that works with hustlers. And we should be having all the addresses on Salvador and São Paulo as well on our site by the end of next week. And we already have guides in both cities.

Yall have a g'day!

Um abraço,:D

RE: More info on Salvador

Thermas Persona and Rio's in Salvador have escorts. Guys who work there said there were also escorts at saunas like Esgrima. I think it's urgent that a reliable M4Mer go spend a couple of weeks in Salvador and check out ALL the saunas. It'll be a difficult assignment, but somebody's gotta do it! ;)
