There was a basement bar in Copacabana that fit your description to a T. I think it was called La Cueva, a couple blocks inland from the big club on the beach where all the female prostitutes hung out. I went there a couple times because I stayed at a hotel nearby. It was very crowded, and I was getting suspicious "bumps" from this cute guy standing next to me. I confirmed my suspicions with some more affirmative, but still discreet, gropage. The young man let me go on with it, all the while chatting up an older gentleman nearby. A few minutes later, they were sucking face in the corner. You draw the picture.

Where exactly IS that bar? is it close to this huge Disco on Av. Atlantica?

And is it dangerous to take boys from there?

Dear World Traveller,

Just like roughff mentioned La Cueva is one the best know hustlers bars in Rio, where michês hang around... Other famous bars for that are Verdinho in downtown. And there is a brand new disco called Sintra, in São Cristóvão where there is a good number of older folks and young men who enjoy older chaps, not necessarily michês. Another club that is famous for that and that has got some michês is Buraco da Lacraia in Fátima.

You can find the addresses of these clubs at our website, go to:

As for security reasons it's not advisable to take people that you meet a bar to your hotel... you should go to a motel instead, unless he is presented by somebody you know or if you have previous references.

Another thing to be aware in these bars and discos is the infamous "Boa noite, Cinderela". In other words don't accpet any drinks from any stranger and another word of caution don't walk around with your credit and banking cards, and not much cash... To go out in Rio, you can carry with around R$ 100-200 and you shall be fine.

Enjoy your time in Rio and play safe,

La Cueva is on Miguel Lemos, between av. Copacabana and Barata Ribeiro, near the corner of a small alley, Travessa something-or-other. It's in a basement in a building on the Ipanema side of the street, and there's no big sign but there's a red light. Just go downstairs and up to the door. Some of the guys are escorts, but not all of them are. There are a surprising number of guys in Brazil who are attracted to older men.

Also, many guys who may be rentable (including some of the sauna boys) go to Incontrus, the disco next to Corujinha (the yellow awning/Jabba bar in Copacabana).

Carlo said it all: Don't take new acquaintances to your place, and go out with very limited money and credit cards. "Boa Noite, Cinderela," (or a "Mickey Finn" in U.S. terms) isn't an everyday occurrence, but it DOES happen and you need to be alert. Get your own drinks (never accept drinks or candies or other food from stangers) and keep a close eye on your drink once you have it. It's best if you're drinking beer or a soft drink at one of the discos to get canned drinks and watch the bartender open it (or, better yet, open it yourself).

Nightlife starts late in Brazil and Argentina, especially in the biggest cities like Rio, SP and BA. People start going to "bars" around 11:30 to midnight to have a few drinks, meet friends and gossip. Then they head out to the discos/clubs, starting at around 1:30 a.m. Before then, the places will be empty. There are no closing hours, so dancing's 'til dawn and later!

La Cueva is no different. Sometimes hours are a bit earlier on Sundays, because people have to work on Monday. Some bars and clubs will have "matinees" starting between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. Think of them as "tea dances." Locals will know the hours, just ask around!

I can only speak to this issue from the standpoint of a one-time visitor, in February of this year. But, here goes:

I went to La Cueva once, and, at peakhour . . . it had, maybe . . . 10 customers. Half the customers were what I'd call worn out and aged hustlers. The entire place/environment caused me to flash-back to some dreary gay bars in the U.S. thirty-years ago. It had a rough trade feel to it . . . and that's not what I was looking for.

One place that I think hasn't yet been mentioned is LeBoy disco. I went to LeBoy maybe three times, and on each occassion I saw several to many hustlers who'd arrived after working the saunas (guys I'd seen in one of the several hustler saunas). I did see some of the sauna hustlers working the crowd. I also saw some sauna customers (foreigners) who'd arrived with several sauna boys on their arms . . . for a night of dancing/partying. As has been mentioned on this board before, many of the sauna hustlers work as dancers at LeBoy. As for non-hustler meet-up possibilities . . . I met a college student-type guy who was out with friends, and we headed back to the Hotel Atlantico for the night. By the way, I found LeBoy to be one of the best gay disco's I've been in, anywhere.
