Uruguay has long had very progressive social legislation, but it's a small country (only 3 million people) and half of them live in Montevideo, the only large city. Being a small country, everyone knows everyone else, and that means the gay scene is low-key. However, there are bars and meeting places in Montevideo and (in season) in Punta del Este and adjoining Maldonado.

Like Argentina, Uruguay has mainly been a country of immigration from Spain and Italy, so there are lots of good-looking men. But I wouldn't make it a cruising destination. It's more like a worthwhile side-trip from Buenos Aires or Porto Alegre. I'm sure that you can find escorts advertised in the classifieds of "El País," the largest daily paper, and I think there's a gay Uruguayan website that may have information on bars, cruising spots, etc.

Uruguay update

I´ve been in Uruguay (Punta del Este and Montevideo) two weeks for New Year and ten days in March during Carnival.

As all probably know Uruguay is living a very deep economical and social crisis (similar to the one in Argentina) with 20% of unemployement. That is probably why I found it very easy to find company both in Punta del Este and in Montevideo.

I must say that spanish is my native language and even if I don´t live in the area by these days, my accent is still rioplatense so that makes things easier.

Punta del Este was full of people at the beginning of the year. During January and February lots of young boys from all over Uruguay go to Punta del Este looking for a summer job (in the restaurants, selling anything in the beach, etc.) and many of them try to find an extra "income" in the evenings.

Escorts (hustlers) were available in Maldonado (in calles Sarandí and 18 de Julio between calle 25 de Mayo and calle Bergalli) and in the center of Punta del Este (mainly in Avda. Gorlero and in the Rambla de Circunvalacion). You must have a car in Punta in order to do some investigation.

I found lots of nice uruguayan boys and a few from Argentina, but I don´t have any contact info as they were generally waiting for clients in the steets.

During Carnival I found Punta less interesting, as many tourist had gone away and so did many of the boys.

There is still a gay nudist beach (Chihuahua) near Punta del Este´s airport with very hot action (mainly on Saturdays and Sundays).

Montevideo was very active during Carnival. There was a lot of action in the Avda 18 de Julio (that´s the main street in downtown Montevideo) mainly in the six blocks that go from calle Ejido to the Plaza de los Treinta y Tres (also known as Plaza de los Bomberos). Specially in this place I found lots of boys waiting for their "clientes".

The clasificados of the newspaper "El Pais" are also a good option to find escorts: http://www.diarioelpais.com, then go to Clasificados (you must register to enter), then to Servicios and finally Mensajes Especiales.

I found an add of a very nice boy named Cristian (26, 1.78, 70) very longhaired and specially well hung (8.5" x 5). He is versatile but he told upfront that he would not kiss (wich was a little frustrating for me). Anyways he was very nice and we had good sex.

Rates are around $300 (U$S 11) for an hour both in Montevideo and in Punta del Este.

One bad experience: I met a very hot stripper in a private party (his name was Gustavo and he works for a well know stripper group in Montevideo) and invited him to a Hotel. When we were arriving there he asked for his money upfront (U$S 15), told me he needed to buy something and left. He never came back. These kind of boys seem to act very similar (and some of us tend to commit the same mistakes) x( everywhere in the planet, so don´t be too confident.

Finally I found two websites for escorts in Uruguay: http://www.urusexo.com (none of the escorts were interesting) and http://www.lospioneros.com (with a few interesting boys). I contacted Los Pioneros by email (no phone number in their site) and they asked me to send them a contact phone number. As I had plenty of company I did not send them my phone.

Both Punta del Este, during summer, and Montevideo are good places to spend a few days (specially if you come to Buenos Aires) and very easy to find good action.

RE: Uruguay update

Thanks, Daniel, for such a useful and detailed report on the scene in Uruguay.

I had forgotten about Carnival in Montevideo. Unlike Argentina, there is still a small but significant Afro-Uruguayan community in Montevideo which keeps the Carnival spirit alive and well, and Carnival can be quite festive! Your experience in Punta del Este is similar to that of my Argentine friends who go there. Punta is extremely seasonal. Thousands of people throng there in January and February, and the rest of the year it's almost deserted (except for Holy Week). In the southern winter it can be quite chilly, windy and rainy, so during the winter school holidays people looking for beach weather head north to Brazil. That means that Punta is very quiet that time of year. In the summer, Punta has traditionally been the beach getaway for the Argentine upper classes, so it's packed with the gilded youth of South America. With the economic crisis in Argentina, though, business was off this summer in Punta as many Argentines stayed at home.

Maldonado is an older, established Uruguayan town that adjoins Punta (which is relatively new). Most of the service workers in Punta live in Maldonado, and as Daniel says, there is cruising there, year round. Punta is also a bit like Palm Springs for Argentine gays: there's a small year-round retirement community of Argentine gays, and I gather they have "special friends" from Maldonado to help while away the gray winter days. . . ;)

Until the economies recover, Argentines will be traveling abroad less than before. This summer, the Argentine beach resorts had record crowds (evidently not ALL the money in Argentina got caught in the freeze of bank accounts). A private gay beach resort opened in Mar del Plata, Argentina´s largest resort, and evidently was a huge success. The most upscale Argentine seaside towns, Pinamar and Cariló, also were thronged, but I don't think there's as much gay activity as in Mar del Plata. All of these places, including Punta, are well worth getting to know for foreign visitors, especially those who want to beat the winter blues in the Northern Hemisphere! As fabulous as Brazil is, there's more to South American than Brazil, as you'll discover when you visit the rest of the continent!
