Backup Place to Stay

Atlantico Copacabana, Rua Siqueira Campos, 90 Copacababa, First off, it's the Hotel Atlantico, Copacabana, get room 1101, except you L.A., the daytime manager here is Rene-Pozo, tel: (21) 2548-0011 ask for him, he will give you special rate, tell him you know me.(tomcal).he said if they are friends of mine they will get the good rate, not the American rate, btw, i think rene is gay!.(he actually sent Carlos(from Rogers, beautiful Italian, i have a pic of him in my Jacuzzi today) up to my room today when he arrived!!! the fax number is: (21) 2235-7941,I just booked my rooms for next April. I was trying to scan in the business card for the hotel but, all of the sudden it's not working, so here is the complete info: Hotel Atlantico, Fua Siqueira Campos, 90 Tel 21-2548-0011, email :reserva@atlanticocopacabana.com.br

Website: http://www.atlanticocopacabana.com.br, Ask for one of the corner suite rooms, those that end in 01 or 09,(like 901, 1009, 1201, 1209, etc.) they only have 12 floors, so get on the floors 9 and up. I have alot more to tell about the hotel i am at, Atlantica Copacabana, i got a 2 room suite with sauna in the room and jacuzzi, for $180. reayas a night, thats about $46.US and it includes breakfest, not that i am ever up that early. I wouldn~t recommend it for first time Rio visitors as it is 4 blocks in from the beach and i think on someones first trip you should be on the beach, but it is only 1 block from Estacio and 2 blocks from Rogers, it is very clean nice, nice lobby bar and the restuarnt on the 2nd floor is very good. Rooftop pool and bar, but very small pool

Places to Eat

"The now "notoriously famous restaurant between Siquerio Campos and Godivea one block in from the beach, i call it the yellow awning restaurant, as i still don't know it's name, but it's listed in LAShowbiz post from August", is busy even on Monday night when all the other restaurants are slow. Last night there were only 3 tables of people at Maxims at midnight, usually pretty full then, we walk back by the "yellow awning" and it is packed with it's usual cast of Rent boys, locals, drag queens, and the assorted "fellini movie" extras! The two guys from Washington D.C. had been there the last couple of nights and like me, love it, they said sitting here having a drink and eating is like having a front row seat to a great show. I believe it's "Coruja" ("Night Owl"). It's on Hilário Gouveia and Pça. Serzedelo Correia (the square on Av. Copacabana between Siqueira Campos and Hilário Gouveia). Coruja is on the corner, on the side of the square nearest the beach. Tomcal & Co. can probably comment on the food (not that it's the main attraction) but they do make a good "frango à passarinho," which is a kind of finger-food pan fried chicken cut up in small pieces, Chinese style. An excellent beer accompaniment. On the same block as Coruja is the disco "Incontrus," also with rentables. . . Like all such places in Rio, it doesn't get going until late (like 12:30 - 1:00 a.m.)Maxim's is a good bet and certainly the most convenient

Portuguese Expressions:

top = ativo (AH-cheevo)

bottom = passivo (PAH-seevo)

versatile = dois (DOUGH-eesh - the number 2)

to cum = gozar

Do you cum? = Voce gozo? (VO-say gozo?)

Everything else can be done with hand signals or pencil and paper.

Cheapest Inernet Cafe

I walked the whole stretch of Avenida Copacabana as well as Prudente de Morais in Ipanema and the cheapest internet cafe is Cyber Place located in the basement of Clube Israelita Brasileiro, Rua Barata Ribeiro 489 (between Rua Santa Clara and Figueredo Magalhaes), Copacabana, Tel. 257-1963. OR It is located at 374 Copacabana Ave, on the second floor, just north of Republica do Peru and just south of the Cocacabana Palace. The rates are 20 min - R$2, 30 min - R$3, 1 hour - R$5 and I was first stunned to be charged R$1 for 10 min. Not only that, but the owner speaks some english.

Were to get money?

Cannot find this very detailed thread anymore, can anyone find it?

Get money at ATM's. Citibank and HSBC machines seem to work best; at other banks look for machines with Cirrus/Plus/Visa/MasterCard stickers on them. Or ask which is an international ATM. ("Caixa internacional." Pron. "KAI-shuh een-ter-nah-syo-NOWL")

What to leave off your list: Gloves? (For what? Or am I missing something here?) :-) Mosquito spray you can easily buy in Brazil, although if you mean repellent (as opposed to insecticide) I would bring that with me because there's a wider choice in the U.S. and elsewhere. Unles you already have it for some other reason, you don't need to bring penicillin. Antibiotics can be bought over the counter at most Brazilian drugstores. Also, if you're going to self-treat anything, a broad-spectrum antibiotic like amoxicillin (available in Brazil) is probably a better bet. Just remember that if you start taking it you must continue to do that for at least 10 days (regardless of whether your symptoms have cleared up earlier) to avoid creating drug-resistant strains of bacteria.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're good to go!

Your listing of "gloves" have me curious, too! Do you plan to dine at any top knotch restaurants? If so-- take a pair of solid color pants and a nice shirt. Although I did not go to the very good restaurants which some respondents suggested-- I do plan to do this when I return during CARNAVAL (am making arrangements now). I want to go to Copa Palace's restaurant for lunch or dinner-- and other places too.

Just thought I'd suggest this!

You certainly have done your homework.

I found a bank with several machines that accept US credit cards and ATM cards across the side street on the right (as you are facing it) of the Copa Palace Hotel on the oceanfront.

You deserve a great trip. :)

The bank CTDick is referring to is Itau but be warned it is very fickle. Sometimes it works like a charm, sometimes it will work on the second or third try and sometimes (my last trip a few weeks ago) it, nor any of its other branches, worked at all - "Temporarily unable to process international transactions"

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

ok i am here now and after two days at Estacao nothing i read prepared me for the number and beauty of the men i have met

imagine youself surrounded by the 50 most beautifull men you have ever seen in you life all wanting to make you happy

most people speak enough spanish that i can get by

it makes me (and them) very sad to turn down so many beautifull men every night (and kind of freaks me out - I now understand the comment someone said about being the hunter insted of the hunted)

you do have to check you bill as the boys do have a tendacy to charge things (food - booze) to your account

i am only drinking water (as someone recommmneded) and, as it is so hot in there, that is not a bad idea

i may be crazy but i would probably go with 100% of the men at Estacio, no-where in my 50 years has that ever happened (and i have been around)

have been with 7 boys in 2 days - i wanted to remember thier names for all of you who have favorites but i cant (i have spken with/had sex with alexander, yugo, luciano, rafael, william, ernanai (at maxums), reynaldo, felipe, gil (who took me to sugarloaf today), braulio? etc etc)

everyone thinks it is funny/intersting that i carry my own lube (wet) and rubbers in a plastic grocery sack around with me

have to get some sleep, it was 2 days with little or no sleep to get here from california

ps; the guest to boy ratio varies from 25 to 1 to about 10 to 1, in the last two nights i have spoken with or seen maybe 50 boys and 15 guests

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

I'm glad you are enjoying your stay and that you decided to "report in" to us. Remember this is still "low" season. Things will be slightly different in terms of ratio when the "high" season begins at the end of next month or in January. Again, thanks man!

<The trip seems endless from California to Miami to Rio, but as one disco singer belted out: "I will survive." One respondent here suggested that I take a mild prescriptive sleeping pill next time that I journey to the South. I am seriously thinking about doing this when I go for Carnaval (Carnival) and if I find myself back in Brazil in April/May...>

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

ok another update

Yesterday was black cultural day in rio (a holiday). The beach was crowed but after dark it was unusually quiet. Saw several fights with lots of police. Mostly really cute guys showing off their machismo.

Went to Estacio yesterday and Rogers today. Have been having a hard time deciding who to go with, so have started takeing boys two at a time. Seems to make two guys ( and me) happy at the same time.

The yellow cabana restaurant was very festive tonight! Maybe because it was thursday.

Rogers was slower and a little more civilised than Estacio. They really don´t let guys pester you when you are getting in´/out of your locker and that is very appreciated by me. The facilites are not as nice but the boys are almost as beautifull. It is also lots cheaper. I left there calmer and in a better mood. Several guys gave me business cards and asked that i call them for tour guide (etc), including the very hansome cab driver that was out front (wellington). Guys seemed more interested in creating relationships with you, not just going upstairs. Met 2 guys who look and act 100% like people i know in the USA (i guess everyone has at least one twin in the world). Speaking of twins two short blond hotties came in and looked very much like twins -very muscular - but a little too blond and too white for me - although i thought about it.

Am almost on Rio time. There are lots of American men all around with beautifull young boys on their arms (at restaurants - on the streets -etc). They don´t seem too chatty so I mostly ignore them.

It sounds as if the "off season" has many advantages. I appreciate the info about your adventures. I look forward to being in Rio next week and will certainly check out Rogers the first day. I heard about some shots fired into the Rio zoo today. What is your impression of what is taking place?

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

The Rio zoo is at the Quinta da Boa Vista (the old imperial residence) in the down-market Zona Norte. Things have been kind of hot and heavy in the ZN recently, and it would be wise to exercise caution if you go there. Except for the Quinta and Maracanã Stadium, there aren't many reasons for a visitor to go to the ZN, so it shouldn't be much of a concern.

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

Hello,

And let's not forget another reason to go to the Zona Norte: Spa 73, a nice, friendly sauna that can use the business. Although it has not gotten raves on this site, I really liked it. The staff is very friendly, surroundings are in nice condition, and the boys are just as hot as at the other saunas. On an average night, there were probably 12-15 boys there. The area is not the greatest but I cabbed it from Copacabana and never had a single problem. In the ten days I was there, I probably visited Spa 73 seven or eight times and always had fun, always met hot, friendly boys, and always wanted to go back. Incidentally, I am still corresponding with one of the cuties I met there, Luis Carlos. And guys, we need to keep these places open. Give it a shot. So even though it is in a dicey area and is farther from the beaches than the other saunas, Spa 73 is definitely worth checking out. For those who don't know the address, it is:

SPA 73

Rua Pereira de Almeida 73

Praca da Bandeira

Tell them Hobbit sent you. (My name Robert was always pronounced like the creatures in Tolkien's books, so they know me as such.) :-)

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

am continuing to meet many people

have now a small phone book of names and numbers

met someone yesterday that has been here 30+ times, always stays in a 2 bedroom aprtment for $50US night, has a boy come in and clean every day and they he fucks him (for 30R a day), has never had any trouble with anyone and goes everywere in Copacabana at night. For details a two beroom aprartment/condo costs about $30,000 to $50,000 US with about $100 a month for the building maintenance, 24 hr doorman, water, gas, etc (of course a view of the ocean would cost more). I will definitely try the apartment route on my next visit. By the way, my friend tells the doorman that if his guest leaves without him, or without a call from him, to detain him at the door - something is wrong.

I spoke with someone who may/may not be a manager of Rogers and Estacion (seems that they are owned by the same person - the staff go back and forth) and he said they were opening a third suana in the same area in December (why not he said - they make so much money) tried to get the address but a cute boy went by and i got busy.

Absolutely love the garlic steak sandwich on a french roll at the yellow awning restaurant - it costs 5R.

I believe at the current exchange rate anyone could retire here and live comfortably. Of course I would keep my money in US banks and only wire down what i needed.

RE: my before i leave trip list (going 11/18 for 11 day...

Well, you've certainly been spending your time productively and researching carefully! :7 I hope to become a carioca myself before too long (I retire at year's end). November's U.S. elections definitely helped crystalize my retirement planning.

Some practical considerations: If you're thinking of a place in Rio, or retiring there, keep in mind that as a tourist you can only stay in Brazil legally for a maximum of six months in any calendar year. If you want to be legal, without becoming a permanent resident, that means you need to have a place to spend the balance of the year. It's possible for retirees to get permanent residence visas in Brazil, but then you become subject to Brazilian taxation on your world-wide income. If you stay within the law, that can be expensive, because Brazilian income tax is high. I've calculated that my tax in Brazil would be twice what I pay in the U.S.! And don't forget that, absent a tax treaty between Brazil and your home country, you may also be subject to income tax in your country of origin. Words to the wise. . .

To ensure a roof over my head for the time I'm not in Brazil, I'm thinking of also getting a place in Buenos Aires. At the moment, real estate prices in BA are comparable to those in Rio. BA is only a 2-1/2 hour flight from Rio, has good medical facilities (last time I looked, the British Hospital there takes Blue Cross), and of course it's a handsome city with good restaurants and cafes, beautiful people, thriving gay life and a full spectrum of cultural attractions. For those who'd like something less megalopolitan, there are other attractive and affordable alternatives, like Montevideo or Punta del Este in Uruguay, or some of the more appealing smaller cities of Argentina, ranging from Alpine-like Bariloche to wine-growing Mendoza to the high desert-and-cactus Andean scenery of Salta/Jujuy in the far northwest.

good thought about argentina

had planned to keep a house in california, argentina sounds wonderfull

some unconfirmed info: Rodgers is scheduled to close in January - seems that the land, building and bussiness are owned by different people, who are in dispute, and a judje ruled against one of them so it closes,

the new sauna does not have a name yet but rumour has it it will hold 300 people, it has an address: Siqueire Campos 202 Copacabana and will be owned by Junior (who owns Estacio) and Edgar (who owns Lagoa in San Paulo) - they are advertising already but cannot agree upon a name Tel 2549-2361

Estacio was nearly dead last night but I heard Rodgers was great, were they had a show, pouring warm chocolate and vodka on the boys in the show and having the guests lick it off them

it is very warm today and i am afraid i am air conditioning dependent today

Nothing lasts forever, but it's sad to hear that Roger's is closing. It's been such an institution! I hope the historical preservation society is at least planning to put up a plaque! ;-)

Do you have any idea WHEN in January it's scheduled to close? And does the new place have a grand opening date set? If Edgard is going to be a co-owner, my guess is that they're going to formalize a "circuit" between SP and Rio, so guys who work at those places will be spending time going back and forth between the two cities. That could be a good thing. More variety, and less need to visit SP unless you have some other reason to go there besides a pilgrimage to Lagoa!

Sad to hear that Roger's is closing soon. However the address you gave as possible location for a new sauna to replace Roger's (Siqueire Campos 202 ) is the exact address of an existing sauna, namely Ibiza which is a gay sauna with no "rent" boys. Could the owners of Estaco and Laguna have bought "Ibiza" and plan to convert it to sauna with boys?

went to 117 today, great air conditioning (it was hot everywere today), clean rooms, many beautifull boys and friendy staff, the woman who runs it really stays on top of everthing. Really liked meeting a large new crowd of boys (and also met someone from Sacramento - small world.)

Have been back one month and can honestly say not a day goes by without some very fond thoughts of my time in Brazil, can't say that about many other places. It's subtle but intense. Also my what to bring list was pretty good in my first post.

Hi,

Are Tomcal and Bam the same person? I am confused. And has anyone ventured to the new sauna? Can't wait to check it out when I am back in February. And I can't believe I never knew about Curojinha Restaurant. It is 1/2 block from the hotel I stay at, which is on Hilario Gouveia and Atlantica. I am definitely going to check that place out. Sounds like it's quite entertaining. Hope Roger's is still open then, too. I liked alot of the boys there, especially Juan Carlos. (and Cristiano at 117......and Luis Carlos at Spa 73......and Leo at Estacao.... Take care, guys. Robbguy

Hi, Tom,

The reason that I asked if you were Bam is because in reading the first post, Bam writes:

When he wrote to "tell him you know me", I thought he was saying he was Tomcal. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect. In fact, I think you're cool and I am hoping that we will be in Rio at the same time sometime so I can meet you. I really enjoy your posts and have gotten quite a few good pointers from you. And we both share an affinity for Juan Carlos. ;-) Take care and sorry if I offended you. Robbguy

Robbguy, no offense taken(Bam may be offended being compared to me!)

I was Actually in Palm Springs this weekend with the two guys from the board i met there in Aug, LA Showbiz and Man4ManSF, as well as my buddy who went with me last Oct. We showed alot of the pics and talked about how great Rio is and how we never grow tired of going there. Then we all went out and by 11:00 had separated as we had each met up with guys in the local bar to go party with! It's high season in P.S. and there are alot of guys out there partying! Hope to see you in Rio! Tom
