I'm sure many people will post answers to your questions but except for one, you have to understand that there are many many answers here. First, as to HIV testing, you obviously have to assume that they don't and play as safely as you can. In my personal experience, all the tops used condoms as a matter of course--there was no question about this at all. Just play safe as you would with an escort at home and you'll be fine. As to cancelling, I think that given the price you can't cancel once you get in the room. I think you're obsessing too much about how it will all work and just imagining problems. I did the same but after I'd been there 2 minutes, I was completely relaxed. I've been several times before in Rio, but never visited a sauna.

At this moment there are a lot of travel offers to Brazil and Argentina because their attractive exchange rates, and I am thinking to visit Rio only to get a new experience at the saunas.

I got a lot of information in this site, but as a newcomer I would like to ask about some basics:

 

I supose that the customers (those out of shape) walk around with bathrobes, and the guys with wrap-towels? I am not really overweighted but totally out of shape, so at my 50 y/o it would be some deppresing to walk around with a towel among all those muscular guys...

If I choose a garoto de programa, it suposed that his rates are only for a limited time basis at a private cabin or he comes with me all long the sauna round (steam room, finland sauna, spansih shower, etc). It would be very exciting to share with one of those guys the steam room. Is extra charge for that?

Payments to boys are before or after? Do I need to go to my locker to get my wallet at the end of services or is any system to get money with you?

You'll rapidly lose your self-consciousness about your physique. In about 30 seconds you'll be so transfixed by the gorgeous guys available that you won't have time to think about yourself! ;-)

 

Some clients wear bathrobes, but most just wear towels. If you're quite stout (like me) just ask for a large towel ("toalha grande"). Brazilians aren't very body-shy, so even out-of-shape clients aren't usually concerned about their bodies.

 

The saunas and steamrooms are usually collective; there's no need to pay a guy for his company there. Just ask if he'd like to join you in the sauna afterwards. (Just be prepared for him wanting to look for other clients, instead, or getting ready to leave after having had a session with you.) There's no extra charge for using the saunas.

 

If you're new to the place, one of the guys (usually one of the pushier ones) will probably offer to show you around the place. DON'T feel obligated to have sex with him, but do at least buy him a drink or snack if you take him up on his offer. Drinks and snacks get charged to your locker key number and you pay your entire sauna bill, including your admission, when you leave. You pay the guys directly in cash AFTER you've had a session, never before. Just go to your locker, where you'll have some R$50 notes conveniently placed so you can just pull one out and discreetly hand it to your young man without showing off a roll of cash.

 

Don't worry about competition from other clients. You'll be considered desirable in part because you're a foreigner. Also, there are usually plenty of guys in the saunas, so it's very unlikely you won't find someone you like. If you do see someone you like who's involved with another client, it's perfectly OK to make eye-contact and smile significantly, and quietly mention you'd like to see him later, if there's an opportunity to talk with him. Otherwise, just look for him in about half-an-hour to an hour. But by then you will probably have seen someone else you like! :9

 

I know it's easier to say than do, but don't stress out about this. The saunas works very well, and you'll feel very comfortable quite rapidly. If it's your first time, my suggestion is DON'T go with the first guy you see. You're not in a rush. Look around the place, take a sauna, have a drink or snack, and then when you've had a chance to relax a bit and get used to the place, start cruising. Have fun! Practically everyone who goes to the saunas does!

I just returned today from a week in Rio.Monday, I was the only one at Rogers. They chase after you, believe me with their hard ons. Like the previous poster stated, just play and go to your locker to hand over the R$50 note after it's over. It's understood that's the going price. With the exchange rate that's about US$17.00 and it was the same R$50 price in May when I was there which meant US$25.00. So that makes it cheaper. Seriously, nobody addressed your first question. I, too, had this concern. I don't know if it's taboo or a highly sensitive issue here, but nobody really addresses it.

 

Rio supposedly had the second largest number of people with AIDS. I don't know if this is true, but I know it's definitely HUGE. I don't think... actually seriously doubt... these boys are tested on a regular basis... at least not the uneducated ones. Some guys will try to perform oral with condoms (more than likely, they're educated and know about the spread of disease). Unfortunately, I think alot of these boys put their lives at risk because they have no other alternative. Disease is not the issue... supporting their family is more important.

Actually, I think you're pretty safe with one of the guys at the saunas. Although I'm sure they don't get tested regularly, they seem to play safe (at least in my experience). They use condoms if they're going to fuck. Sucking, of course, is a matter of choice when it comes to risk. It's a very low-risk activity, but not 100% risk-free, so you have to decide for yourself how much you're willing to risk.

 

Brazil isn't AIDS-ridden. The most recent estimates are about 500,000 cases in a nation of 170,000,000 people. Public education efforts have been quite extensive and seem to have been pretty successful. People know how AIDS is transmitted and how to avoid it. Brazil's AIDS treatment programs are models for the world, and especially for the developing world. Treatment is free, and Brazil has been in the news for its threats to break drug patents if that's what it took to get the meds at prices people in the third world can afford. This has been successful, and prices have become affordable. In a few cases the drug companies wouldn't go along, so Brazil went ahead and is producing the drugs itself in a state-owned pharmaceutical lab. When it comes to dealing with AIDS, there's nothing underdeveloped about Brazil!

Tri, one point I would make that differs from your post, regarding the boys always using a condom, is that in my three trips to Rio this past year, every time, at each of the three suanas, there where boys who offered to let me fuck them bareback, I did not ask!! May I kindly suggest that guys who are on top should also have a condom on? There is significant risk of infection with HIV to both parties in unprotected anal sex, regardless of who is in which position.

The sauna boys have to go to the desk to arrange for the rooms. In all three Rio termas, there are bowls of condoms and lube packets. In all my trips up to the cabines, I never had a boy go up empty handed and the condoms were used without question.

I'm startled by Tomcal's comment. Having had experiences with, literally, dozens of sauna boys in six different saunas and being - with three exceptions in my life - a preferred top, I have never had one suggest barebacking or do anything but practice the safest kind of sex. I thought I was the only man who had been to Rio and not gone to the saunas! I'm glad to know that's not true!
