The "First Trip to Rio" thread is getting way too long; I'm starting over here. About the beach, a couple of other things:

1. Swimming: Compared to the water temperatures on the West Coast, you can go in the water in Rio just about every day of the year. The Cariocas usually think you're bonkers if you do it in the wintertime, but then they're hauling their minks out of the vault when the temperature drops below 80º. Being creatures of the tropics, that's cold to them. In California (especially Northern California) we think that's a heat wave! As anywhere near big cities, periodically the water isn't suitable for swimming because of pollution, or algae blooms, or whatever, and the red flags will go up. If you aren't sure, look and see if people seem to be going in the water, and ask. There should be signs posted whether the water is "improprio para banhar" or something like that. DO be careful of the currents and tides; Copacabana and Ipanema are on the open ocean and they can be powerful. If the surf is really high, be very cautious. Before going in the water, look back and mark your spot by identifying landmarks, your beach umbrella, etc. At Copacabana the current tends to take you toward the Ipanema end of the beach, so if you aren't paying attention you'll find yourself swept down that way and come out of the water lost and disoriented. You need to be able to find your way back to your spot on the beach.

2. The "beer" guys: Besides the kiosks on the beach sidewalk, there are also drink vendors on the beach itself under blue plastic canopies. These vendors mostly have been in business for ages, and have established local clienteles. This applies to the gay beaches in Copacabana and Ipanema, as well. The vendors employ the services of kids who act as "runners" to take orders and bring you drinks. You can just order and pay as you go, but if you're going to be in Rio for a week or two (and want to find out about the availability of any of the guys) this is what you should do. (Sharpshooter, Ernani, and any other Rio guys, please contribute here if I leave out anything or make a mistake!) First, after staking out a nice spot you like on the beach, go introduce yourself to the beer vendor by name and get his, tell him where and how long you're staying, and indicate you'd like to set up a tab. This will save you having to take money to the beach for drinks every day (this is how the Brazilians do it, by the way) and you just settle up with him every few days. You're expected to maintain brand loyalty and stick with your vendor once you've chosen him (there often are rival camps, thanks to local beach politics) so if you know guys from Rio you can ask them which one they use before you pick one. (Usually there are a couple at each of the gay beaches.)

3. The boys on the beach: You'll notice that there will be some interesting looking guys hanging around the vendors' stands, which might be the way you decide which one you're going to do business with. Once you've become a customer, at least in Copacabana you should be able to inquire if the vendor knows whether someone you've seen hanging around or who otherwise looks like a beach regular might be interested or available. The vendor knows it's a gay beach, that sex-for-pay is part of the scene, and Brazilians just are not shy or timid about sexual stuff. They're much more direct than Americans, so you needn't be embarassed about asking. If the vendor knows that the guy is interested or available, he'll introduce you or send him over to where you're sitting, and you can take it from there. If the vendor thinks you don't understand the scene, he might say the guy is a miché or garoto de programa (hustler) and you can indicate that's OK. For what it's worth, you can ask the vendor if he knows the guy (if he isn't one of the guys who's always hanging around his stand), and if he's a "pessoa de confiança," (someone who can be trusted). They'll tell you if they know; after all, they don't want the beach getting a bad reputation because it'll drive away business. I don't know if things work the same way in Ipanema because I don't usually hang out there, but I imagine they do. Sharpshooter or other Rio readers, what can you add to this?

What can I add to your statement ? You seem to have told all details, but, I must remind (1st time) visitors to be careful to whom you meet in the beach.

Some friends of mine had bad experience bringing stranges to their rooms. Even bringing some of them to a sex Hotel can be traumatizing ( see my remark in "Danger in Paradise").

When I say play safe, I don't mean using condoms, only.x(

Especially if you don't speak the local language...

But, if you like dangerous adventures as a fuel to your sexual thrillings....

After Marko and Ernani's tales, in another thread, you should take heed. But as was pointed out, if you take your new beach friend to a sauna (one of the non-escort ones) then the odds of trouble should be very low because they'll have to put their clothes and weapons in their locker. And your money and valuables will be similarly locked up. All in all, probably the best solution to potential problems.

Cool, Trilingual has a wonderful review of the escort saunas in the "Escort Reviews" section. Look under Mexico/South America. On the alpha listing go to Brazialian Saunas and it is all explained clearly.

I found all the information to be true and very helpful.

That could be really useful to Cool; however, this thread is about the beach. Cool, I picked up several of the hottest Le Boy dancers at Ipanema beach several afternoons after the crowds started to leave - I picked up one real nice stud in front of the Copa Palace at 5 am one morning when I couldn't sleep, but there's much more to choose from in Ipanema. (It never ceases to amaze me how much better looking the studs are that one ends up with when buying in daylight and without several shots and bumps.)

You said in your other post that you work out and you implied you're under 40. If those are true, take the beach purchases back to one of the sex hotels a block in from the beach. They are much, much more conducive (that's an awful big word for an eight year old) to hot, sweaty sex than the beds in the saunas. One of the dudes took me to a hotel that had mirrors on the ceilings and walls. Big fun.

Play safe and play smart. Rio is like New York under Dinkins. Just be aware and you'll never want to leave.

Later.

You mean this forum right? "escorts south of the USA"???

As about your comments:

Yep i'm 35 and i work out. I'm not a "doll"and i don't like dolls. in another thread i mentioned str8 couples are much welcomed than guys alone. i'm totally manly looking and especially str8 acting. And -lots of "and"- i know i don't need to buy "boys" in a sauna. But....i also know i'm not the guy picking up "one real nice stud in front of the Copa Palace". That's how i feel, i just cannot do it. I'm on the discreet side of things and not into bar scenes although i must admit i would feel more comfortable doing these things abroad. it's culture, it's how grown up, it's cause i'm in europe, you name it.

Have you ever thought that might be cameras? :-)

i know i have too many questions. it's because i want to know more about Rio or Sao Paulo, what's the scene there etc etc. why? well, because this summer will be the last one i'm alone

Trilingual's review of the Saunas is in the REVIEWS section of this board (not here in the message center). Click on "Escort Reviews" on the menu at the top of the screen. If you came to the message center directly (and there is no menu) click on the brown banner at the top of the screen.
