I have been to the famous thermas sauna, Barcelona. it was very crowded. this is just to inform you that it is even better than before.

I went there on wednesday last week as from 5 PM and there was a big crowd already. People seemed to thin down after 10 pm. This is of course during the weekday. there were more than 20 boys to choose, mostly brazilian, portugese, couple of blacks and spanish. Most boys are of virile type. In brief, the answer is YES, it works like the saunas in Brazil. However, they charge for your admission first, and then you have to settle up your bar/food bill afterwards when you leave. Unless they've changed the system since my last visit. You pay the boys directly, as you do in Brazil.

Somehow I have ended up in Barcelona and can confirm that the hot Brasilian guys are still at the Thermas Sauna. It is quite fun to sit poolside and watch he naked boys romp in the water.

I noticed that the last review of Thermas gave it a thumbs down for cleanliness. So, on my second visit I tried to look past the boys at the facility itself. That's not easy to do.

But, it is a pretty old place that could use a good cleaning. I wonder if the rooms ever do get cleaned. They are kept so dark that you can't really tell what you are standing (or...) on. And the staff, well they weren't very friendly on either visit, but then, who cares? The boys are!

Has anyone been to Sauna Thermas since the above review was posted in Sept 2003? I will be in Barcelona between Christmas an New Years and plan to visit Sauna Thermas. However, I just read another negative review from a gay website in Spain. Below

I know that there are Houses of Boys in Barclenoa. Generally their prices are beyond what I can afford. Has anyone had success with street trade in Barcelona.

It's been at least a couple of years since I was at the Thermas, so I can't speak about its current status, but the supposedly Spanish review reminds me of comments about the Brazilian saunas I've heard from local clients. People in Spain and Latin America are very "classist," at least many of the upper-class peole are, as are some of the arriviste middle class. They get horrified by the thought of contact with the working class (aka "lumpen" in places like Argentina). Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean a thing to Americans (although it may to Brits). Many of us have fantasies of getting it on with a straight, or straight-acting, working man.

 

The cleanliness issue is another matter. The last time I was there, the Thermas was no worse (and actually better) than some other European saunas I've visited. It may have slipped since then. If there's new management, and they haven't done anything to improve the place, shame on them. Fixed up and run as well as the Brazilian saunas, the Thermas would be an absolute gold mine!

Tri and funseeker thanks for the update! I definitely will check out sauna casanova. I read earlier today that Thermas sauna is now part of a chain of gay bathouses throughout Spain. Casanova belongs to the same chain as well as a couple of other saunas in Barcelona and at least one each in Valencia and Sevilla. Still, I understand that Thermas is the only one with a wide selection of boys for rent.

 

Tri, I agree with you that if it were run well, i.e., like the Brazil saunas, then it could be a goldmine. Anyone interested in investing in it?

On my last day recently while in RIo- I sat and observed the guys and my environs and began to fantasize about having a sauna similar to what's there now but with "hot pumping" music blaring throughout the place (even in the cabines), something I encountered and enjoyed when I would visit the saunas in San Francisco in the early 80s and late 70s. Good music to fuk by really enhances the experience. I'd redo some things in my sauna that currently exist in Rio's saunas, but all in all this would be an interesting venture if it didn't cost too much. (I don't know if I would charge the guys a fee to enter; I'd have a system to keep out the tough ones.)

I've read your recent post from Rio. Thanks! I would have gone to Brazil at Christmas/New Years instead of Barcelona, but all tickets to Brazil were in the $1,000 and up bracket. The flight I have from SF to Barcelona over the holidays cost me $500. In hindsight it may have been better to pay the $1,000 because what I'll spend in Barcleona in comparison to what I would have spent in Rio will probably be more than the difference. Still, I plan to enjoy Barcelona. I've been to Rio on a couple of occasions but never to BCN.

Today's most recent review of this particular venue encouraged me to respond. The reviewer stated: "Don't be mean and treat them well." He also stated that "I am being very defensive..."

 

I'd like to say that I appreciated what the reviewer wrote-- in all respects. Some Americans are "shits" when they're in another country. The "I am better than you" mentality seems to overtake them whereby they fail to treat poorer locals humanely. Apparently-- that is what the reviewer witnessed being exhibited by one of the clients while at this sauna.

 

Perhaps with a little education on our part of these types of individuals, this form of behavior might change.

Are you just going to take the reviewer's word for it that the incident involved an American? He saw what he saw in passing and probably has no clue what was behind the behavior. We all know that the man could have been ripped off.

Personnally, I have never seen an incident like that at Thermas. The only rude people have been the staff and it is easy to ignore them.

Regardless of some Americans, I have been there and I am a Canadian and I was overwhelmed by the sauna. It was very nice, clean and I engaging. I would highly recommend it and I am not the kind of guy who goes to sauns very often, but you will find some good treats there for sure.
