Tipping in Europe is hugely different from the States. It's actually OK to not tip even if you are very happy. If you do tip, 10% is very generous.

On Leon - he is tall, and striking in person. Has a nice chest - anyway "nicer" than most of the girls that work Blue Boy, and he seems more butch, which in that place is not hard. On tipping, I agree with Mr.B, that most boys do not expect it at all. And Europe IS different from the States with regard to tips.

 

That said... if I get a guy through an agency (eg. through Bertram) knowing roughly how much of the fee goes to the agency, I give some of that sum back to the guy in a tip - IF HE WAS REALLY GOOD :-) I have found the guys who get these tips to be most gracious - some even refusing at first.

 

The first time I picked up on this was after a memorable overnight with Steve Masters in London (WOOF). It seems he made quite the impression in Amsterdam - as the perennial Ugly American. Sorry to all you fans of Aaron's but I am only repeating what I heard from more than one escort in "pillow talk". I think that, in general, it is true that most of the boys do not *expect* to be tipped.

 

That having been said, however, I personally think that it's pretty mean *not* to tip them (assuming, of course, that they were good). If they are working for a club or an agency then their net income is about 100 guilders for each hour that they work (that's about $40 US at current exchange rates).

To be honest, I suspect that the biggest factor in those stories that Adriano heard was probably jealousy - I imagine that Aaron was probably charging the clients who took him to Amsterdam something slightly in excess of $1000 a day - that's a *lot* more than any of the boys in Amsterdam could ever hope to make while working for club or an agency.

Of the fl 250/hour ($100.00) for an appointment, the young man receives only fl 100...you do the math. A tip of 10% is certainly appropriate.

 

And in defense of Aaron...

Boys (and that's what many escorts are) will always be jealous of a good thing. To believe "pillow talk", i.e. heresay is ridiculous. In regards to Amsterdam, I assure you that he knows exactly what he's talking about.

I did not intend my question on tipping to upset anyone. I was, and am, only trying to understand what is appropriate behavior. Sometimes tipping can be an insult, sometimes it is normal procedure, and sometimes it's happy surprise.

 

I think my comment on Aaron Lawrence and his advice to tip in Amsterdam is accurate. I think has remarks were on his web page shortly after what I think was his first trip to Amsterdam some months ago. Perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps I read them in an Aaron Lawrence review of escorting in Amsterdam from some other source. At any rate, I read some where that it is an insult not to tip an escort in the Netherlands. This resulted in my question about the proper tip for an overnight escort in Amsterdam.

I almost refrained from commenting on *Aaron's reported comments and what I had heard. Yes, it was gossipy, and I have been in and out of these web chat lines enough to know that one cannot ever get away with a single negative comment about this particular escort and his talents. I had hoped to only give James "another view" of a quite reasonable request on etiquette (to tip or not to tip?).

 

To one and all, the phrase "ugly American" does not refer to personal beauty, but rather one's attitude when in another culture. One can be a god, but when uprooted and brought to another country, the feeling of "cultural superiority" cannot be well-hidden. Aaron wrote about his visits to "Blue Boy/Why Not" for instance, and the comments I heard were from the guys there (some who claim they were with him)... and I have criticized the boys at the club enough to know how to weigh their comments.

 

On another side, the guys at Michael's do charge much less, and I would say even deliver more for the money... makes one wonder about the high costs of US escorts - and what I personally think are highly inflated costs. In this, the advice on what to tip is very well given... noting too that their fees have all gone up about Fl 50 this month (which is nothing given the inflated dollar over the european currencies). This is another topic and another thread... so I will refrain forever from ever again mentioning a certain writer/porn actor/escort by name or hearsay, and apologise to all his fans.
