New escorts and the possibility of sting operations...?

I have a question: do solicitation stings happen? I often see new escorts listed in sites like rentboy and m4rn (there are a couple listing themselves under $200 right now, and they seem quite interesting, and a tad suspicious), and I sometimes wonder if they're placed there to lure potential customer/lawbreakers. Do sting operations still even happen? We chat on a forum about escorts all the time and it all seems fine and that it's business as usual, but I sometimes wonder if there are situations that aren't in the Spitzer level of notoriety but go unnoticed in everyday anonymity. And how would someone protect themselves if so?

I am sure there are sting operations but most I have heard deal with free listing sites like Craig's list. I would venture the escorts are more at risk with the sites like Men4rent as there is no cost to contact an escort.

The bulk of the complaints regarding escorting come with street walkers and neighborhood task forces who usually lump the drug traffic and prostitution together. People do not want to see that on their streets or strings of customers going up and down stairs all times of the night.
