Check out US Cellular plans. I have 250 minute of nationwide calling for about $45 a month. And Johnny is correct; no charge just to answer your phone.

Providers shouldn't matter much these days. It's such a competitive market that NO provider can afford to let one of their competitors have a feature they don't have for very long.

Coverage is important, though. Make sure whatever provider you choose has coverage in the areas you need it (and preferably nationally).

The only phone I'd consider carrying right now is the Motorola RAZR. It's compact enough you don't feel like you need a little red wagon to haul it around, and it's sturdy enough to take a little knocking around. It's a little bit "last year's marvel" but FOR ME it's perfect.

I agree - I've had my RAZR for a month now and like the way it fits in my shirt pocket without a buldge. Also, it is now in the permanent collection of MOMA which attests to it good design (should that be important to all the industrial design queens out there)

But...... I have seen friend's phones which are more user friendly. The RAZR has a steeper learning curve than necessary.

I suppose that depends on what you use it for.

When it rings, I answer and talk. When I dial, the call goes out. Voicemail is easy enough.

That's pretty much all I really want a phone to do. ;-)

(No, that's REALLY all I want a phone to do! ;-))

When I need a camera, I'm usually carrying a camera that will do a better job than the phone. I don't do text messaging at all. If I want to surf the web, I'm generally carrying a laptop or tablet PC that is far better suited to the task.

I want a phone to behave like a damn phone! The RAZR rocks at that. ;-)

Ironically, I find that my RAZR is so small, I misplace it at least three times a week.

Left between sofa cushions, on the bathroom counter, on top of the refrigerator, etc.

And since I don't have a land line to ring my cell to locate it, it's a huge pain. But you're right, in terms of acting like phone, it's great--unless it's windy where you're using it, the person on the other line will hear nothing but wind. Just a minor flaw in design.

I travel extensively and found that Verizon meets my needs for nation-wide coverage. I do NOT have their America's Choice network because there are dead zones where you either don't have coverage or are roaming. Under their nation-wide plan I access any tower (doesn't matter is it's Verizon or some other carrier) and there are no roaming charges.

I have friends using other providers and it's usually a pain-in-the-$%&S to listen to them. They often sound like they're in a tunnel, lots of static, they keep cutting out, or there is an echo.

Most people I call comment that it's sounds like I'm next door. They don't believe I'm using a cell phone.

BTW, the phone I have is an LG VX4400. Sure, it's an older phone but I tried out the newer models and they drove me nuts. Voice dialing wouldn't recognize my voice, took more words to try and place a call, and more bells and whistles that I didn't need or want.

Also test drove a couple of PDA/phone combos. Didn't like them at all. They used a touch screen instead of physical buttons. Real problems for me when in the sun and couldn't read the screen.

Ended up buying a new battery for my old phone and I hope it never dies.

But, IMHO the most important things to consider are coverage and avoiding roaming charges.

Good luck.

See, that's the thing. Newer and coolest will win you geek points with family and friends when you're showing it off, but it loses luster quickly when you can't carry on a conversation when it rings.

Same with PDA Phones, etc.

Coverage even more than roaming charges. If coverage is good enough, you never roam. If you roam too much, coverage ain't so great. :)

I think for provider it all depends on what you are comfortable with and how the coverage is in your area and if you travel. For me Sprint has worked just fine. Since I have only traveled to major cities my coverage has been great and haven't had any major issues with dropped calls. As for phones I have the Treo 650. I've had it for a little over a year and it has served me well. The internet speed is ok I think for a phone and haven't had any major issues with getting onto websites or checking my email if I am away from home. Some might consider it bulky but I usually just slip it in a bag or undernieth the seat of my scoot and call it good.

Hugs,

Greg
