RE: Not Paul Walker...

A walker is a guy who goes to charity balls with dates, or events where you need someone on your arm. I think.

BTW, I passed the Dik Ho restaurant yesterday while driving through Yucca Valley...any relation, Dick?

Lucky, you are correct. Normally its applied to men hired by women, ahem, of a certain age to escort them to various functions. But sometimes its a friend or business associate. For example, Martha Stewart's stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, was also her walker for various events in Manhattan.

RE: Not Paul Walker...

A walker as opposed to a wanker (although there are more similarities that differences) tended to be unique to American urban (read metropolis) very W magazine types of events / crowds / people. Walkers had there great moment on the center stage during much of the 60's, 70's - some would argue into the 80's. They tend to frequent society events in New York, LA and Palm Beach and could occasionally be found in exotic island locals between Christmas and New Years. Usually mature men (almost always GAY (a few never left the closet) and certainly past their best before date by youthful day standards - certainly into their 50's or older. Polite men who were charming, witty, the absolute highlight of the party, snappy dressers, etc. I actually don't think most walkers ever planned on becoming one, they sort of fell into by virtue of the women they catered too - The great walkers of the past generation would include . . . Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass, Perry Ellis, some would argue Truman Capote. Many of the great society decorators of New York - long gone - some of old age others of Aids. Barbars Walters best friend - the New York slime ball lawyer - Roy Cohn - the poster boy for walkers in denial.

I really don't know if we have walkers in this the first decade of the new millenium as walkers were to polite to ever talk about their (homo)sexuality. It was just understood they were SPECIAL ! In todays tell all pop culture the notion of a walker just doesn't fit into modern day media frenzy. In fact if anything walkers have been replaced by the artifice of pop culture and tabloids and loads of irrelevant entertainment show sound bites. AH - walkers - a piece of history - like Rounds - where you would find the occasional walker at the conclusion of his evenings obligations.

I worked for Chelsea Guys for a very short period myself. I raised my rates during that time too (although I quickly realized what a mistake it was and brought them back down).

But when you're working through an agency and realize how much they're charging for you, you can quickly start to think you should charge those same rates on your own.

But in reality, you make a lot more money charging reasonable rates on your own.

Only a couple years ago, I saw a TV show on Walkers in Palm Beach. Seems the phenomenon survives especially during The Season there. Not bad duty for a 50-60-something decent looking guy who's content to "be seen" with a 70-80-something dowager. x(
