While recently at a Southern CA bar known for freelance hustlers, one approached me as I was headed for the door. After the engaging smile was presented, a 2 minute conversation ensued (where ya from, what do ya do) where I promptly asked "What do you charge?". When he told me $200 I declined and started for the door again, where he said "Buy me a drink".

Isn't this a bit much folks??

(And no, I did not buy him a drink...)

I love that quote from Clancy, I hadn't heard it.

Which bar was it, the lovely Spotlight in Hollywood by any chance? $200's high, but sitting around, getting drunk, and settling for what you can get have a long tradition there. Of course once it's late at night and and least one of you is drunk it's often not all that much fun if you do go for it.

RE: "Buy me a drink"

There was a time in such establisments that any guy that was worth looking at would be provided drinks(either sent from guys looking to start a conversation,or from savvy bartenders/owners who realised having cute/sexy boys hanging around was good for buisness)for the entire evening. That seems to have changed in the last few years.Pity.

Arn't those requests more like 'demands'?

With an implied threat, even if you are not trying to leave!

Of course, it's a bit much but that's what to expect from hustlers. I've been in these situations and sometimes I buy the guy a drink (if I think the "relationship" may be going somewhere LOL), and sometimes I just decline the request and move on. When I have an escort with me, I always make sure their needs (like drinks) are taken care of so I do the asking if I notice they are without a drink in a bar or at my home. I don't wait until they have to ask, but that's a different situation as I don't expect to be "hustled" by an escort.

RE: Slow decline...

I think you're still right, what few cuties come into the place do still tend to get bought drinks. But it's not the owner or several potential clients at the bar anymore. It is usually an obnoxious drunk who expects to sit next to them and paw them for as long as possible. On top of that, the obnoxious drunks don't seem to be good for anything more then another drink, yet they 'take possesion' hurting the chance the guy will get the kind of business he's there for.

This may be part of the reason there are fewer and fewer hoties, they can get bought drinks anywhere without having to put up with that crap. Don't know where they're going to make their money though. I'm sure the top third try Numbers, but where do the other 2/3rds go now that there's practically nothing on SMB?

Is another hustler bar forming in Hollywood?

>Aaron,I will happily buy you all the cape cods you would care

>for if you should wander into the lovely Spotlight.

Hey BigGuy, Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately, I don't have any plans to be in LA anytime soon. But, if I ever do, The Spotlight sounds like quite the place! I did a little search on Google and came up the the following, colorful description of the place:

The Spotlight

LA's second oldest--and, some claim, scariest--gay bar

Address: 1601 N. Cahuenga Blvd.

City: Los Angeles

Cross Street: Selma Ave.

Phone: (323) 467-2425

The Skinny

If you ever wondered where all the freaky trannies went during Hollywood's gentrification, this is the answer.

The Spotlight is a dive and proud of it. This is where the flavorful underbelly of Hollywood gay life washes up. It's clear that most of the patrons have "history"--we don;t ask and don't tell--but who knew the place had history, too? It's the city's second oldest gay bar (the oldest is the Friendship in Santa Monica), open since 1963.

Well, it's sure all in the delivery, isn't it? "Buy me a drink." That's just boring. Now, if he'd draped himself languidly across the bar and said, in a deep, husky, somewhat needy growl, "Buy me a drink, sailor...?", he'd a been in the passenger seat of your car right quick.
