It's been awhile since we discussed the current state of the various listing sites, and their various business models.

 

In my market, since M4RN culled their non-paying escorts, the number of listings declined from 32 at the high mark to 4 currently - an 87.5% decline. x( (Good thing I saved all those phone numbers and email addys }( ).

 

What's the story in the rest of the escort world? :o

I'm impressed with the change on men4rentnow. There may not be a lot of escorts listed, but those listed stand a better chance of being legit. Hopefully they'll gain listings as their reputation grows.

 

I'm planning a trip to SF, and advance scouting on sites such as meetlocalmen is frustrating me. Guys who either replied that they were retired or were unreachable two years ago are still on the meetlocalmen site. I've talked to three guys who said their ads were looted from other sites.

Agreed, since they're paying their listing fee each month. Also, the average age of the guys listed on M4RN has seemingly risen to late 20's/early 30's. Just now, 7 of the 9 guys featured on their home page are over 30.

 

Interestingly, I see few of the more mature guys listed on AmericanMale, which is free to list for escorts.

I think Hawk was looking at the VA - Washington Page where there are only 6 people listed. I have no idea how many were listed before.

 

I see 64 ads listed on 10 pages in the DC section. Many of them are guys who live someplace else and just say they travel to DC. Devon from SF is one of them, along with several others.

 

Of the guys who actually say they live in DC, I must say that very few of the "regular" 'scorts who are often reviewed on this site are not listed (ie, Nick, Talvin, Ethan, myself, etc.) I, personally, still don't think it is worth paying the money to advertise with them.

What's Goin' On?

 

Well, that depends. If you look at Rent Boy, Men 4 Rent Now and American Male (to take just one of the free sites), there is a great deal of overlap in certain cities with some guys who are exclusive to each site. This appears to be true, just to check three urban areas: San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City. In the case of San Francisco and Los Angeles, the clients have a proven area to check for current escorts, the local gay publication. Unfortunately, in San Francisco, the Bay Area Reporter remains out of the mainstream and is not on line. However, both Next and HX in New York City and Frontiers and IN LA Mag in Los Angeles, all have their escort listings on line (for out of towners) as well as the actual hard copy for locals and natives. This situation is true in D.C. and likely other areas I am not familiar with (David magazine in Atlanta, the Miami equivilent of it, etc.)

 

I think for the clients in those areas or visiting those areas, who are concerned with "freshness dating" of escorts, the best bet are the local gay media as a number of escorts would advertise in say the Bay Area Reporter or Frontiers than advertise in Rent Boy or Men 4 Rent Now is much higher both as a percentage and a sheer number.

 

For the clients looking in smaller cities and regions, especially where there is no gay newspaper or the newspaper does not accept escort advertising (Boston is the largest of these, but this also includes the gay newspaper in Atlanta, for example, as well as Portland and most likely many other cities), the free web sites would be a help, as might Men 4 Rent Now.

 

Were I M4RN, I would seriously go after these escorts would a tiered advertising program (offering an escort in St. Paul or Tucson or Santa Fe perhaps a longer listing for the same price as in more competitive areas such as San Francisco or New York).

I think the clients looking for well reviewed escorts everywhere are best served to use this site. However, those who simply wish to find escorts can try the free sites. I happen to think American Male is the best of these simply because you can view more photographs than the usual one "free" preview shot provided by others before they ask for an Adult Check or AVS type payment to view more; because you view telephone numbers for the escorts who provide them; and finally, because the web master is making an effort to provide statistics on when an escort updated the profile.

 

It pays for the escort to update the profile as the date they do so is automatically added to the listing. Therefore, a client can see that he is interested in three escorts but escort A and B have not updated their listing since 2002 whereas escort C did so recently.

 

The other sites which I believe have the most escorts listed are Guys 4 Rent and Men 4 Rent, as well as Stud Files. Many of the other sites (for example, Male Desires, Circuit Star, and especially Big Cock Society) have one problem or another with them. For anyone looking for international escorts, Erados seems to be the best of that set, far more so than Rent Boy, especially in information provided.

 

It is a great site for anyone travelling world wide.

Just to clarify, one of two local gay rags, Innewsweekly, does publish escort adds. They suspended print adds with pics but continue to publish print adds w/o pics. However, they publish the print adds and also pic adds online at:
