Hello all from Chicago -

I'll be in the Windy City next Wednesday thru Friday. Just taking a few days off to relax and workout. No plans and no agenda! Just going to see what comes up and go with the flow. Can anyone tell me what is going on Wednesday and Thursday evenings? I can always check out the local paper but its hard to find the real scene. Not into circuit dance parties -- mainly looking to kick back and have some serious fun. Can anyone recommend the good bars, private parties, etc for these two nights? Post or email (bobby@muscleplay.com)!

Thanks.

My Kind Of Town

There are really only three dance clubs in Chicago, two of which play predominantly "circuit" type music: Circuit and Hydrate, both on Halstad. These two places (on the nights they are "on") also have the most "circuit" type crowd. Berlin (on Belmont) plays different music and also can attract a different crowd, including some straight people. Charlie's (Broadway) has a country night on Friday, I cannot comment on the crowd, but I would imagine you should find a friendly crowd there. I do not like country music, but the place came recommended.

Finally, a younger client recommended these sites, you may try them for suggestions of other opportunities:

You also might try Digital City: Chicago and City Search: Chicago on the web for comments by users on bars and other ideas for activities.

This isn't exactly a recommendation, but here goes...I went out on a Thursday night in Chicago to a place called Sidetrack -- it's on Halsted at Roscoe in Boystown (locals, I'm PRETTY sure that was the name of the place -- am I right?). It was just a bar but huge -- as big as some clubs are. And it was packed with people, the usual range of twentysomethings to fortysomethings. However, they were all watching the Golden Girls on the various large video screens throughout the bar, and you would have thought Chris Rock was performing live the way this crowd was just eating up every line. Of course, just twenty minutes before I'd been in my hotel room, telling myself to stop watching TV and get out. So I went out and got to watch TV with a bunch of other people. So depending on how you feel about that part, it may or may not be your idea of a fun place. I did think it was cool space, though, and it definitely drew a good Thursday night crowd.

RE: My Kind Of Town

Charlie's is all country, all the time. Or used to be. Friendly crowd, most of the time.

One of my favorite bars to just kick back and relax used to be the North End, but they now have Karaoke on Wednesdays and it becomes 'str8 night'. Worse, it's 'str8 people get drunk, rude, and sing badly'. Avoid.

Although everyone has their own tastes, I have to agree about SideTracks (I think it's what it's called). The bar is huge, a lot of different sections, TVs everywhere with different things on. I think it is one of the nicest/coolest gay bars I've ever been to. It's definitely a place to go and just kick back!

now i have a hotel

I finally made my hotel reservations using hotwire and ended up with Hotel 71 -- says it is a 4-star upscale hotel at 71 Wacker. Anyone know anything about this hotel? Decent location? I know it's a train ride to boystown to the bars and bathhouses but that is the area i wanted.
