Chicago Bath House - Steamworks or Mans Country

I'll be going to Chicago soon and wanted to know which bath house is better and why - Steamworks or Man's Country. I've been to Steamworks many times and it has usually been a lot of fun but it depends on the crowd. How does it compare to Man's Country. I heard Steamworks was vanilla compared to Man's Country - is that true. Which has the better men?

It depends.

 

It depends on the night, it depends what you're after, it depends what you expect.

 

Steamworks is generally "newer/cleaner" while Mans Country tends to be "older/worn". The men can be hot at both.

 

Steamworks is conveniently located right on the boystown strip, while Mans Country is a ways away on North Clark.

 

Because it's connected to Chicago Eagle, Mans Country tends to have more of the leather crowd in evidence. And their sling room is quite well equipped. (Don't ask how I know!) So if that's your thing, try it out.

 

Mans Country has dancers around midnight (weekends), usually including a pornstar headliner. Steamworks doesn't. (Or didn't last time I was there.) But Steamworks is just steps away from the Lucky Horseshoe which has dancers every night.

 

It depends. Try both.

I'm not from Chicago but I have actually worked at both in the past year and both are worthwhile. Steamworks is definitely newer and very clean but Man's Country is also clean. At Man's Country I was one of the dancers and that was my one and only visit so I can't give much more of a recommendation. At Steamworks, my cleint was looking to play for an audience and the management was not against public acts. Both had a wide mix of men although Steamworks seemed to have more of the young, twink types.

 

This is a great question becuase I'm planning a Chicago trip in May and plan to hit at least one bath house in a non-working mode if time permits.

Based on personal experience, SteamWorks is the better sauna: it is situated in a nicer neighbourhood (exclusively gay, safe); it is a cleaner & newer facility; the men on Saturday nights can be amazingly hot (note best time: AFTER clubs & pubs shut). All ages are welcomed there, so if you are "middle-aged", you won't be shunned. Brian - the General Manager - is a dear.

 

Man's Country is in a far-away neighourhood (far from popular hotels), and a bit on the seedy side. In my opinion, a less friendly

crowd.

 

Final thought: don't forget your passport or identity card else they will not permit you entry -- at either sauna. (thank-you Brian for making a major exception for one dizzy tourist!)
