If you want to work in "mainstream" porn, stay away from Hot Desert Knights. Currently, no major studio will knowingly use a model who's done bareback films. Jackson Price got away with it only because he didn't bother mentioning his first video to anyone, and when the news broke it caused quite a ruckus in the industry.

 

Chicago isn't exactly the porn capital of the world, but there are a few producers located here. Toby Ross is here, but he's focusing mostly on twink videos these days. Your best bet is to visit the porn companies' web sites. They all have information on submitting your pics & info.

 

Since you mentioned Chicago, you should probably plan to be in town Memorial Day weekend and attend ALL the events related to Gay Chicago Magazine's Grabby Awards. I have never done porno, in spite of the opportunity to do so for some of the "major" studios. Once you do a porno video, you need to understand that you will never be able to do certain things again and that it will follow you for the rest of your life. That said, the best way is to get yourself an agent. Larry / Chi Chi is a director, a business person, and has his own priorities; you may become one of them, but then again you may just be more product for him. A good agent will present you to a variety of studios and I would look at some porno and decide who you want to work for. Personally, I would recommend Falcon Studios and their Jocks and Mustang lines.

"Entertainment" queens are quite big on ruckuses but it's all noise. It didn't stop them from continuing to hire him though, did it?

 

I would dare say that the vast majority of power bottoms in the industry are all positive and the producers know it and couldn't care less. So, it's a little hypocritical of them to make a "ruckus" about someone doing a bareback video - how do they think the guys got it in the first place? Ballroom dancing?

Ummm ... I didn't say anything about being positive. There are poz guys working in porn and everyone knows it. There are guys who bareback in their personal lives and everyone knows it. It's what you do on camera that can end a mainstream porn career.

No, it's a LOT hypocrytical. The entire industry is. In the early days of HIV, model releases included statements like "I am HIV negative". Over the years that morphed into "To the best of my knowledge..." and then to "I understand the risks of contracting..."

 

Nobody really cares if a guy does bareback films so long as he uses another name. (Like fans are too stoopid to notice.) So there's yet more hypocrisy.

 

There's a really weird dynamic in pornowood right now. The industry is puffing up for a big battle. The "pro" and "con" elements are slinging barbs back and forth regularly. Sadly, the "con" argumers are just getting tired of the argument.

 

As soon as one major video company releases an unsafe sex video, it will mean the end of condoms in gay porn. It'll happen within the next few years, I'll bet.

 

But TODAY, making a bareback video is the kiss of death to a mainstream porn career. It's a controversy none of the producers want to risk in a business that is constantly worrying about government intervention already.

There is a FORTUNE waiting to be made making bareback videos using mainstream porn stars and it's not gonna take years. It's already begun and in a couple of years it will be the norm. I think Jeff Palmer is the opening salvo - before you know it, Blake Harper will be taking loads up his ass on video (I don't have any inside info, this is speculation). His career has peaked and for him to continue to be a star he's gonna have to go one step further and that will be barebacking.

 

Michael Brandon has already done a video where he eats Chris MacKenzie's cum so logically the next step is barebacking.

I was being hopeful with the "years" statement. :-(

 

Porn is a HUGE business, but they're forever walking the thin line of public acceptability.

 

In today's market, BB videos are sort of the elephant's graveyard for guys trying to milk a little more out of their 15 minutes of fame. Who's gonna be the next star to do BB videos? Who's star is tarnishing rather than rising? You can make the list yourself.

 

There are others who appear to be shiny but not too bright who have seriously pissed off people in the industry to the point they're probably having trouble getting work.

 

Add to that the fact that companies like Hot Desert Knights pay roughly double (and in some cases triple) what the "other" companies pay and you've got a situation that is alluring for someone already having trouble finding work.

 

It's a sad industry.

It definitly depends on the individual, three of my best friends, do porn here in L.A., and if someone brings in a video to the gym with them on the cover they happily autograph it for them, I would guess a significant number of guys at this gold's gym have done videos, so maybe that's why it's not as big a deal as it would be in different city. I would have to guess that Miami, NYC and L.A. would all have a a fair number of the guys at the local gay gyms, having done some video work. That's the simplistic view, Michael, and a bit inaccurate as a global statement.

 

There's a very successful and prolific producer on the east coast who pays his models NOTHING. He gives them tapes they can sell for themselves instead. (And they do very well for themselves selling the tapes to the local video store in their home towns.)

 

Very few models ever reach the upper stratosphere of $25,000 you mention (Ken Ryker for sure, but damn few others). Few ever see $1200 per scene and CERTAINLY NOT on a repeating basis.

 

It's sad but true that the pay goes down with each scene unless a model reaches hyper-popularity and hyper-saleability status.

 

The best average I've heard ranges from $500 to $900/scene for the "average" A-list stars. B-list stars can expect less. A-list stars who are overexposed can expect even less. Why would a producer pay for an A-list star when they can get newer/younger talent for B-list prices?

 

If you're scheduled to bottom and the top can't perform, you both take a pay cut. (You can imagine how popular those "tops" are!)

 

And there are no residuals whatsoever (except for one deal Ken Ryker made). You get fucked, you get paid, and you leave. The studio makes all the money.

Yes, doing porn is nothing but advertising for other services for many (but not all) of them. Talvin DeMachio and Michael Vincenzo are baldly honest about that being the case.
