Lucky, if the client posted a message that seemed to me to expressing as much hurt as ripped did, I'ld try to console him also.

Nor would I, but I would say something like,

 

"Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting you until <appointed hour>;

you're welcome to stay here on the couch until I get ready, and then we'll start things at <appointed hour>."

 

Maybe you could come up with something phrased even better, but I think it is possible to convey the notion that the clock starts at the earlier of the appointed hour or when the client is ready without being hostile.
