As a constant reader and an occasional contributor to these forums, I have watched DC's frequent postings with amusement and annoyance. He is not the only one to do this, but he certainly takes the prize, for hijacking posts from another topic and turning them to his favorite: himself. Sometimes this is witty and well executed, sometimes simply narcissistic. Lately his posts have become vitriolic, and I wonder if there is something else going on in his life beside the happy-go-lucky adventures of a successful sex worker. It seems to me that he spends a perhaps unwholesomely large fraction of his free time reading and responding here. I personally think the better course is to pull back a little, develop a couple more interests here and elsewhere, laugh more and frown less. I find any input from practicing escorts interesting and welcome here, and that goes for DC. I suspect they are helpful contacts and conversations for him and other escorts as well.

 

So, DC, give this current brouhaha a rest, cheer up, and share a broader range of interests with us all.

I am sorry to see you leave, and I am sorry to see you leave in anger, and over an issue that I think has been blown out of proportion.

 

Anyone who has followed this board for more than a few weeks will know that you and I have disagreed over many things, sometimes energetically. And it wasn't long ago that you said that you hardly ever agreed with anything I said. I thought that was honest and up-front and pretty darned okay.

 

Message boards make funny communities, at least in part because no one ever gets to see any other member of the community face to face and everyone has to depend on mere words to understand all of the things other people are trying to communicate. I think it's really easy for misunderstandings that in person would turn into a five-minute shouting match and then go away completely to blow up on a message board into something quite mean and nasty.

 

But even if the communities that surround a message center are funny communities, they are still communities. They are made up of people who join the community, find it interesting enough to stick around and contribute in one way or another and then one day wake up and realize that they aren't a stranger anymore. They're part of a group and, in some way, they've become a part of the lives of all of the other people in the community.

 

And so it is with you. You have become part of this community and part of our lives and I am sorry if you choose to go.

 

There are people who have posted the opposite sentiment in this thread and elsewhere. People who say they don't like what you have to say and wish you would leave. It's funny, in some cases the people who are most vocal about freedom of speech are the first to complain about someone else and the first to try to convince them to leave.

 

I think you have a terrific future in front of you. You're bright, witty, interesting, and you take your education seriously. Those are things that are inherent to you and have nothing to do with your physical appearance or your career as an escort or anything else. They are part of what makes you you.

 

At one time not so long ago, I told you that it could be really infuriating trying to have a conversation with you and there was a time when that was true. But you've really tried to change the way you contributed here and it showed: many people noticed and appreciated it and commented on it. And once you weren't correcting everyone all the time, suddenly people started realizing that your posts ere were interesting and often witty.

 

There are far more people who lurk here than contribute. Far more people who read what we write than we will ever know. People who I feel certain have enjoyed what you have written and learned from it and, yes, laughed both at and with you and me and all of the others.

 

Drawing a line in the sand and saying "I will only do this if ..." is seldom a good way to solve a problem. Instead, it makes it hard for either party to back down or find a compromise because someone has to seem to lose face. In this kind of situation, especially, where both parties feel that justice is on their side, that can sometimes be very hard indeed. Pride can be a very difficult taskmaster.

 

But it's been my experience that usually there is a middle ground where everyone can find some things to agree on. Maybe not on everything but perhaps enough to be able to see a path out of the swamp.

 

In this case, let me offer a path.

 

I think the moderators do a good job at filtering messages here, in a way that's usually pretty fast and pretty transparent. They don't get paid (at least that's my understanding), and instead offer their time and services so this board can work smoothly. I would expect the job of moderator would be fun the first day, okay the second and pretty tedious from there on in. So I appreciate their time and efforts, for I am able to enjoy the fruits of their labors, like everyone else here. And it seems a point of pride with them to adhere to a certain set of standards that seem pretty reasonably designed to protect our privacy while still allowing a pretty free-flowing conversation.

 

On your behalf, all of the messages that I saw were still on the 'okay' side of the policies as I understand them -- although you were getting a little close for comfort even for me. Deej has said that there was one other post I didn't see and I have come to think of him as an honest man. So I believe him, while still aware that I did not read that post and so cannot really comment on it.

 

I can understand why you think you were being censored. I can understand why they think they were upholding the standards that allow this board to continue. That's two important principles and they are exactly the kinds of principles that can clash loudly and do, every day, in many places in our society. Free speech is always pushing the rules and, as Americans, we cherish it and depend on it and sometimes push it to extents that other people might find really very surprising.

 

But good men of good principle sometimes just have to agree to disagree and shake hands and go forward. Sometimes we just have to be adults and sometimes that's very hard indeed.

 

But remember that being nice in the face of adversity will amaze and impress your friends and confound your enemies.

 

You have a great future in front of you. I hope you continue to share it with us. I'm not Hooboy and I have no power to act on his behalf. But this community is made poorer when any member leaves and I would be especially sorry to see you go.

 

If you need an excuse to come back, tell them BG asked you to.

I take no particular delight in finding out an escort's real name (though I have found out the real names of more than a few), I did the WHOIS search to make a point. In the years I have been following threads and contributing to them I remember quite a few tantrums. Here are some of my favorite scenarios:

Clients that are obsessed with an escort good. "He is the best escort there could possibly be. Clients that can't believe they got ripped off. I never cease to be amazed by your eloquence and reason. I, too, will hate to see Ethan abandon this board. And my sense of deej, Barry, and the other moderators is that they do a thankless job, and seek to do it fairly and equitably. After my initial post, I've been pretty silent on this current controversy, and probably for good reason. I'm not really interested in choosing sides, making this Ethan vs deej & Barry. I realize this whole thing started over the Billy Brandt thread, which I could really give two hoots about or less. From my perspective, Ethan and I have gotten along splendidly, considering our politics are almost diametrically opposed. I enjoy his wit and edge, but I know it can be a bit much for some, as is evidenced by the distaste some have expressed. That said, I wish we could all learn to get along with each other, and regardless of opinions, still try to maintain a level of respect for each person. I know that's easier said than done. I've been in discussions where some folks always have to have the last word, and in others where there's no willingness to even consider another opinion without characterizing it as insane, stupid, moronic.....the list could go on and on. But in the end, your point about this being a community of sorts is well taken and right on the mark. The question is, what kind of community will we make it.

 

By the sheer length of your post, it is evident that you care enough to try to establish some peace and harmony here. Speaking only for myself, I appreciate those efforts very much.

Having YOU say that, BG, means a lot to me, but I want to clarify something.

 

I did delete a post that gave an escort's real name. This is true and I will admit it any day. It is well within our "mandate" as moderators to protect private information. And I did it with HooBoy on the phone to make sure the boss agreed.

 

That post was NOT from DCEscortBoy. I've said this before, but it seems to keep getting lost.

 

All postings in this brouhaha came from "trusted" members of our community who are unmoderated. That means that moderators see the messages for the first time in public just like everyone else. They don't go through the queue.

 

A little self-restraint can go a long way. A little lack of self-restraint can also go a long way. <shrug>

Since BG indicated that he has not read the original thread(i.e. "Billy Brandt in Unzipped"), I have taken the liberty to copy and paste one of the messages (#47) from that thread. It was posted by alanm, the person who claimed that his message was deleted.

 

My message of Thursday morning was not posted and thanks God it wasn't. It contained too much personal information about Billy, information that was inappropraite on a public forum.

 

Personally I see no reason to question the authenticity of alanm's claim and to doubt Deej's honesty!
