I got a laugh out of Rod's post, too.

 

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, Rod's very first post on this site came in response to the infamous 1999 Awards--when Aaron Lawrence claimed the coveted tiara. Though unaware that any actual voting had occurred, and dismayed that he himself had never even been in the running, Rod was admirably upbeat about the whole affair. After some gracious words to the winner, he vowed to do everything in his power to earn the top award himself the next time around.

 

So I laughed just now, but felt a bit rueful, too. It's always disheartening to see youthful idealism & ambition give way to sullen cynicism.

Actually, I think "optomists" treat the eyes of people with blurred or pessimismistic vision so that they might see that the world is fine, and it's the "optimists" who are sure that it's fine even when their eyes are closed, knowing as they do that the world is ordered for the best possible outcome.
