Is Stella's a good place to find young american boy-next-door and/or white-punk types? Are there other bars too? I seem to recall a place called Cats, if it's still around. Thanks guys.

While you'll often hear that the working boys at Stella's are all latino, black or blatino, that's something of an exaggeration. Yes, the days when blond & blue-eyed farmboys would arrive at Port Authority and head straight for the Haymarket or, drifting ever-eastward, sell their (relatively) unspoiled cornfed charms along Third Avenue or inside Cowboys (and, later on, at Rounds)--those days, alas, are gone forever!

But that's not to say that you won't find a vague approximation of the boy-next-door at Stella's every now and then. More likely, though, even if you're not into banjee boys, you can content yourself with the occasional Brooklyn, L.I. or Jersey guidos who still figure in the Eighth Avenue scene. (Not a whole lot of them, I'll admit, but when they do turn up, they're generally pretty choice.) Same thing with the handful of deliciously raunchy white trash types from Florida, Georgia & Louisiana who've managed to survive the ravages of crack, AIDS and other descents into untimely death. Add to the mix a certain number of Cubans & South Americans who, for no discernable reason, tend to fancy themselves superior to their Latino rivals from PR and the Dominican Republic.

As far as Anglo trade is concerned, my personal faves are the humpy ex-cons in their early to mid-30s who reappear, Rip-van-Winkle-like, chez Cathy, hoping to hook up with the johns of yore. Their juke-box choices, prison tats, chipped teeth and preference for such cigarette brands as Camels & Lucky Strikes send me careening through an almost Proustian time-warp.

But back to the question. If by 'boy-next-door' types you mean blondined twinks, the answer is an almost unqualified no. (However, other recent threads suggest that TowneHouse MAY be a partial answer to your prayers.) As for Cats, that dive was closed a couple of years ago (mostly because it was a wide-open drug mart), and, at its raunchy heights (or depths) made Stella's look like the Palm Court at the Plaza.

Talk about time-warps! Just the mention of the legendary Haymarket (how it GLOWS in memory!) brings back a slew of other half-forgotten places--Dirty Edna's, the Fiesta, Walter's Pub, O'Neill's and its backyard (before it was overrun by cats!) Even the name Trix is receding so rapidly into the past that most of the young hustlers at Stella's have never even heard of it!

Ah, the good old days, when you could find "love" in all the right places. I was very partial to the all-male theatres in the day when cute gay guys used to dance in NYC and then be available for private shows. Who remembers the Ramrod Theatre on W 49th St.? And later there was the Follies on Seventh Avenue at about 48th St. But the most unfortunate passing of all was the demise of the Denise's back room. Back then, you could get more for 40 behind the stage than you get for 200 in a hotel room now. There's something hot about being gotten off by a hand attached to a gorgeous naked body while your pants are around your ankles.

Most of the guys who danced there lived in New York. And the guys who did fly in were from all over the country. There were ballet dancers making a few extra dollars, and some trade mixed in: all kinds and it was all about having fun. Ah, the memories!

LAST EDITED ON May-24-00 AT 10:46AM (EST)[p]If you want all american types, a fair number of the dancers at the Roxy will escort at the end of their shift (around 3 am or later). They are usually pretty pricey, however. And, as for whom to ask, the worse answer you can get is no, in which case you're in the same position as if you hadn't asked at all. Happy hunting.

You are stirring up old memories. My favorite was the Show Palace on 7th ave near Port Authority, where you could get a short lap dance for a dollar tip.
