RE: Atenolol, Procardia (Nifedipine) and Viagra

Thank you so much Doc for the detailed explanation. It is very helpful and very encouraging. You wouldn't be practicing by the way in New York and could take on another patient?I will try to approach my physician with some of these issues. Would the fact that the medications I am taking are in low doses make it possible or safer to take Viagra? I hate to keep imposing on your expertise but if you have the time to write again, I would appreciate it.

Sorry about the late answer. Spent the weekend in Atlanta with my boyfriend. Oh Lord do I hate that airport!

To answer your question...I have had a few patients taking low dose antihypertensives benefit from lower dose Viagra (25 mg instead of 50 mg). In your case, I would recommend speaking to another doctor (such as a urologist) to get a second or even third opinion. Once again...it is your body and your choice, but our job in the healthcare field is to advise you in making a truly informed decision. I really thank you for allowing me to respond to your questions, but as ALWAYS...see your personal physician or physicians (very few people these days have just ONE doctor!) and keep them fully informed about your health.

As to whether I will move to NYC soon...I think I would have to get a divorce from my significant other if I did that! And there is a little matter of the fact that I'm head over heels in love with the guy!

Thanks for listening!

Thanks, Dr. DG. I'm glad that you have exciting love in your life. That's almost as important as good health! Thanks for all your help with my medications and the possible use of viagra. I will try to find a urologist to talk to. It's certainly great to have a physician who is gay that we can chat with on this message board. Glad to hear that you had a nice weekend in Atlanta.

Gosh,

It's so great to feel the love in the air. Two doctors madly in love with each other. I used to play doctor as a kid, these guys get to do it for real AND in the bedroom!

And one is a urologist. How fun!

One of my dearly departed soulmates was a psychiatrist and he was fun because he was only one page ahead of his patients.

A couple of pills of Viagra are best when mixed with any of cocaine, crystal, or both if you're so inclined. Then, toss down some tequila (make sure it's mescal and eat the worm - but you must chew on the worm and grind it up in your mouth, don't just swallow it). If you heart starts to race a bit, just take a lude or pop some xanax. For better effect, however, I usually chop up the downers and smoke them with some weed in a water pipe. I hope this helps answer any pertinent medical inquiries on this unusually informative and interesting thread.

of Exctasy.? Do you need higher dose of V.

Any personal experiences.?

Danrol,

Please be very careful with this. We are talking about a vasoactive drug here. It effects the very system that keeps you alive.

While Viagra is sometimes prescribed by a physician to counter the erectile dysfunctional side effects of other drugs, i.e. some of the anti-depressants, one should not assume it works or is safe to use as a counter to anything that causes a "softy". Dr. DG....help me out here.

If X keeps you soft, the best treatment is not to take X if you want to fuck.

One REAL danger here is to assume if a given dose of Viagra doesn't do the trick, maybe more will. Danger Will Robinson!!! Increasing the dose may lead to cardiovascular collapse before you get that hardon and with CV collapse you may never ever get another hardon unless secondary to rigor.

It is also unwise to rely on the experience of others. The effects of any medication varies from individual to individual based on age, weight, fitness, other drugs, biochemistry, underlying medical conditions (known or unknown) etc.. What works for one person may kill another. In fact, what works for one person one time may not work the next time.

I don't mean to lecture here but I am honestly concerned for you danrol as well as others. Viagra is a wonderful drug that has given many back a sex life they thought long gone. But it is a powerful drug so be very very careful.

RE: Atenolol, Procardia (Nifedipine) and Viagra

Viagra works best with what has been termed "vascular loss" or "vascular insufficiency" erectile dysfunction--the type that is seen as a result of blood pressure or other cardiovascular abnormalities. Certain psychotropics (antidepressants, antipsychotics, tranquilizers (benzodiazepines like Xanax, Valium) and others) which have notable effects on blood pressure (and not all of them do) cause erectile dysfunction which sometimes can be treated successfully with Viagra. Unfortunately, many of these psychotropics have central nervous effects which may contribute to erectile dysfunction outside of any effects they have on blood pressure. Recreational drugs (cocaine, ecstacy (or is it Extasy?) and others) frequently cause more problems since they are not pure, or may have other components in them that are toxic.

Viagra may not adequately treat erectile dysfunction in these cases where nerve function is compromised. If you read the information concerning Viagra carefully, you will note that stimulation (visual or as I prefer--oral!) is required for it to work in getting or maintaining an erection. Any compromise to nerve function would render Viagra potentially useless for that reason.

I do not advocate Viagra for use with alcohol, antihypertensives, nitrates, poppers (amyl nitrate) or ANY recreational drugs since this combination is potentially deadly.

For patients that are receiving medications for treatment of psychiatric disorders, I recommend discussing erectile dysfunction with your psychiatrist--you would be surprised how much he/she already knows about the topic and most likely is willing to help.

That was a good question and a great introductory response. Thanks for listening to my babbling.
