What is the protocol regarding wearing a rubber for oral sex?

Do the escorts on this board regularly perform oral sex with or w/o condoms?

I would never engage in risky behavior in terms of anal sex without a condom. However, do escorts regularly perform oral on their clients without protection? What do the clients on this board prefer?

All answers appreciated.

I've hired a lot and have only been with two guys who gave oral with a condom (but both were willing to receive without one, which also has it's risks for the receiver). One did a great job, and I hardly noticed that I had a condom on. The other time was worthless as far as getting head was concerned. Even though I only see escorts who practice safe anal sex, all but those two (out of over 75 escort encounters) eagerly gave head without a condom.

I can't stand giving or receiving oral with a condom, and oral is much more important to me than anal activity. (Being bi, although leaning gay, that's one reason I've never hired women since they typically require a condom -- sometimes 2! to give head, although I'm still tempted for other reasons.) I've limited the issue by not hiring anyone who advertises with that restriction or who has been reviewed as requiring a condom for oral. However, I also try to make sure that I'm with healthy guys (no street kids/hustlers, safe anal practices, no swallowing, no visible problems, etc.), and I believe that the guys I'm with take the same steps. There are obvious risks associated with this, and there are no guarantees of safety (other than abstinence), but giving/receiving oral with a condom just takes away too much from the experience/personal contact.

"there are no guarantees of safety"

Indeed no one will guarantee it, so it is up to you. But, the evidence strongly suggests that oral sex does not transmit HIV. Of course, it can transmit other things.

A study shows that there is a RISK

"The likelihood of transmission of HIV from an infected person to an uninfected person varies significantly depending on the type of exposure or contact involved. The risk of becoming infected with HIV through unprotected (without a condom) oral sex is lower than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex. However, even a lower risk activity can become an important way people get infected if it is done often enough. The Options Project found that 7.8% (8 of 102) of recently infected men who have sex with men in San Francisco were probably infected through oral sex. Most of these men believed that the risk was minimal or non-existent."

STEVEN, I have followed the reporting on it over the years. There have been several studies, each getting somewhat different results, but never a large number getting HIV. I knew someone once who said he had never had oral or anal sex, yet he still died of AIDS. The Bay Area Reporter in SF has had several articles on this. In Canada the position is stated more strongly that oral sex is safe.

But, everyone should be careful about cuts and unclean situations. Personally, I wouldn't swallow!

There is certainly a risk involved in oral sex, however, each study conducted has a different answer as to how much of a risk there actually is. Studies from the US generally report a higher risk and those of European or Canadian origin report lower. Here is an article that appeared in the DC Washington Blade that says the risk is somewhere between 0 and 2%.

Some of the conflicting results from the studies conducted so far can be attributed to the fact that their so called "subjects" may not be telling the truth when saying that they have engaged in nothing but oral sex for the past 3 or 6 months or what ever the trail period for the study was. In order to conduct a true test, they would have to get a few thousand guys to wear chastity belts on their butts and never do anything else but give and receive blowjobs for a couple of years.

They would also have to somehow monitor the subjects behavior 24 hours a day to make sure they weren't engaging in IV drug use or any other risky behavior during the time of the study. I don't really see that happening anytime soon.

So, in the mean time, as Lucky points out, you will have to assess your own level of risk and only do what you feel comfortable doing.

Here's a little more info from that study Steven cited:

"Nearly half (3 of 8) of these cases reported oral problems, including occasional bleeding gums. Almost all (7 of 8) of these men reported to have had oral contact with pre-semen or semen...

Oral transmission of HIV is very difficult to single out as the only way that HIV is transmitted because few people engage exclusively in oral sex. A number of specific questions were asked by a trained evaluator. The participants’ risk behaviors were assessed by using clinical interviews, counselor intervention, epidemiologic interview, partner interview when possible, and final disposition of transmission risk. Of the 8 cases, 4 reported protected anal intercourse, without the condom breaking, with persons who were either HIV infected or had an unknown serostatus. Men in this study who reported that they were uncertain if the condom was used properly were eliminated from this study."

Unfortunately they do not mention whether any of the infected subjects had other STDs as well. The presence of open sores from an STD would obviously tend to increase their chances of getting infected orally, especially if their partners came in their mouths.

As far as protocol just let the escort know in advance your expectations on the condom issue and make sure that's something he can agree to and arrive prepared for.
