I have been noticing more and more security in hotels in the U.S. This includes elevators that require keyed access and guards checking all persons who enter to see if they are guests. Escorts how are you coping with this? Do you see the same trend? Are some parts of the country worse than others?

Definitely can be a problem. When the alert status is elevated to orange the hotel I normally stay at in NYC starts asking for room keys to get up to the rooms.

Under these circumstances bigger is definitely better. The Marquis sort of made a half hearted attempt, had an employee stationed by the elevator bank in the lobby, but he/she did more looking at people than checking ID's. They are so huge its really difficult.

I usually know the guy so I just make arrangements to meet him in the lobby or nearby and go up together. If it was a first time meeting with somebody I didn't know I'd probably do the same thing, but they might be a bit more reluctant to agree to those circumstances. The other thing I've noticed is the request for picture ID's at checkin. I don't ever recall being asked before Sept 11.

Guest DevonSFescort

I just got back from a short stay at the Hilton Hotel & Towers in New York, where security asks to see keycards for the elevators after 8:30pm. At check-in I told them I was a writer and that some of my visitors only know me by my pen name. I gave my clients -- and Trevor of Gaiety fame, who was kind enough to stop by last night on short notice :9 -- my room number and so they just said they were there to see, uh, Devon Blackwell (I had to make up a last name on the spot) in room ####. Security then called up and announced them, which was actually kind of nice as a last minute heads up that my guests were on the way up. What was funny was that Trevor accidentally gave them his real name, so I almost said "Huh?" when they called to ask if he could come up.

It's a little more annoying when hotels go the minimum security prison route and make you insert your keycard in the elevator. They do that at the Wyndham Belage in WeHo, but there they frame it as a privacy consideration for their guests. You know: in order to ensure your privacy we're going to make you come down and greet your visitors in public. :+

Not A Problem

The Key Card system to access your floor is more typically to access the higher floors. Vegas is the only city where security guards are consistently posted and there are various ways around the system.

I have not had any problems meeting a client in the lobby (or having the client meet me).

Of course if you are REALLY charming they just give you the room key anyway. Right?

I like the Westin in Orlando which requires a key card to use the elevator to get anywhere. However my overnight guest was able to successfully social engineer the key from the front desk. It was a pleasant surprise not to have to go downstairs to meet him.

In Las Vegas last month I never got stopped by the guard at the elevator but my escort did.

Even in this time of increased insecurity I guess actual application of security is going to be all over the map.

More and more 4* hotels and several 3s are adopting the elevator keycard. I find no problem with it. I always provide an overnight guest with his own keycard (no need for him or me to feel he has to be attached to my hip) and for shorter engagements I'm happy to 'escort' my escort :+

RE: Not A Problem

Yeah, the whole hotel/airport security thing can be quite a problem for those of us that often use an alias. I have found myself at a hotel desk being asked for ID a couple of times after the client told them to expect me. Unfortunately, I don't have ID for "Aaron Scott", so I had to be a bit sly about the whole thing.

I know it is a pain for people to have to meet in the lobby or in the hotel bar or someplace else before heading up to the room, but it is often the best way to go in some high security hotels. I expect that the number of hotels that will either require a room key card or a photo ID to use the elevator will only increase as time goes on, so just make sure to plan on such inconveniences.

Guest houseboy

For all you escorts, clients, and would-be-terrorists out there, I'm happy to report that as far as Chicago is concerned - with the exception of the Hyatt Regency on Wacker Drive - none of the hotels I've been to in the last weeks / months have as much as even looked at me walking in and heading straight for the elevator to meet my guys. That includes hotels of any rank (airport motels to the Four Seasons on Michigan Avenue) or height (64th floor being the hightest so far I've gotten from street level unaccosted).

Looking like a charming young man (which we all should) is a definite asset, though, if your client's room has to be located first(especially when dealing with female concierges), as is a good friend one can have a terribly important conversation with on the cell phone while whisking past the check-in desk.

Just some thoughts from the Windy City...

  • 3 weeks later...

This time was a little different trying to check in to my hotel in NYC. The only way to the lobby was from the parking area and had to show ID before going up to the lobby. After checking in I had to show my room key every time I went to the elevator. When someone would visit me at the hotel I had to come down to the lobby to meet them even if they knew my name & room number.

If they did not know my real name and just the room number I would have to meet them at the parking area so I could get them into the hotel.

When in doubt I whip it out:+

I had a similar experience in my hotel in London over Easter. I needed to use my room key to use the elevator. I thought I could circumvent it by asking the escort to take the stairs. I thought I found the flaw in the system, but the doors on the next floor up were locked. He called me from the hall, and I came down to meet him there. I hate this new order!

Unc, perhaps we travel in different circles. In the past 6 months I've had to show ID at EVERY hotel.

What really bothered me was that I was even asked for ID at hotels where I have stayed at least 3 nights per month for the last year! In addition, I have "gold" membership status with their awards program and my membership ID was included with the reservation. It's not like these specific hotels don't know me.

I'd also be concerned about trying to explain the use of a credit card that was NOT in my own name. I've never tried getting a second card in another name but with all the identity theft problems, I serious question if that's still possible.

I kind of expected you to be riding other guests, but seriously, how do you deal with the situation where you need to get off on the 10th floor, but nobody on board is getting off on that flooor?

I've honestly never run into that situation. Which hotels in NYC require keys to ride the elevator? Maybe I've just been lucky.

I was not thinking of NYC, but just in the last few months I have seen this in London, Miami, Atlanta and D.C. It's a growing problem!

Hey Rick you can always use that old police uniform you have back in the closet. You can go up in the elevator with the handcuffs and no one will know.

Oh I just got a mental picure of that and I have to lie down, all the blood is rushing from my head

I forgot there's nothing in Ricks closet}(
