When I visit the local gay porn shop, I am bewildered by the vast array of lubes. I'm also bewildered by the vast array of ads for different lubes that show up in magazines and on the net. How do you know which one to use? Are some brands good for some things, and others for others? I know the technical/scientific/safety things: what I'm talking about here is the pleasure factor.

So I figured I'd ask the experts, as surely nobody knows more about lubes than escorts. OK, guys: Which brand do you prefer, and why?

Without a doubt, eros is my favorite. IT has a oily, slipper, smooth as silk feel to it. In reading the back though, it seems to be ok with condoms, because though it feels oily, it is not an oil based product.

however, next best choice is WET Liquid followed by KY LIquid, for the same reasons as above.

Elbow grease and ID Lube are way to sticky of a feel for me.

Hope this helps.

Will: One little known and used lube that is VERY good is the Falcon lube. Usually, you wouldn't expect a video company making lube to do a very good job. But this is exceptional. Almost 100% of the escorts I have used it with were using it for the first time with me... and pretty much all were very impressed (they all notice it because of the interesting shape of the bottle -- it looks like a very thick dick!)

But the other posters have given you good advice. YOu won't go wrong with Eros... it is very good (though expensive). Astroglide is also very good if you like the same consistency of spit in your lube... so it is VERY slippery, but tends to need re-application (just like the real thing). And Wet is decent, though not my first choice.

These words from the TOP, by the way (though the escorts who like my Falcon lube are coming from the opposite perspective).

Latex Compatible

This is really one of those very personal questions, where individual preference matters greatly. Mr. Munroe has a well-know proclivity for Eros. If money were never an issue, I would stick with Frixion but I do not some men in my personal life as well as my clients find it a bit too greasy. Personally, I do not agree with Mr. Munroe that Eros is long lasting, but perhaps I am too long lasting....

The one thing to be certain of is that you have enough lube on you and that the package say (irrespective of how OILY it feels), that it is either "latex compatible" or "water based" - oil and water do not mix. However, I do not want to give that as a totally hard and fast rule, as for all I know, there may be a product which states "water based" on the label and is not later compatible. This is not a situation where you want to sue the company after the fact if the condom breaks, you would be so much more better off if everything went according to plan, no?

I generally have plenty of Wet Original formula on hand, as it is well-priced and good quality and no one has ever complained. I think Astro Glide is a very good quality, inexpensive lube but you do go through more of it that most. Another comparable and inexpensive lube which does not have an unpleasant taste if you happen to get it in your mouth is Aqua Lube, but it is not easy to find for some reason.

ID is very inexpensive and I personally think it has no longevity factor.

I think Elbow Grease is vile and know more than a few people who break out from it, including the water based, latex compatible version.

Probe was recently reformulated (I believe in 1999) and is usually available at a great price per ounce, but unfortunately I think too many guys had too many bad experiences as when I give them an option (after all, it is going INSIDE them, not me), they always turn away from it. I have a 17 ounce bottle I have only gone through probably 2 ounces in 10 months.

My best suggestion is for you to collect as many "pillows" of these brands, the only one I know to not offer them is Eros, and try out that small quantity and pick the one best for you and which you find you prefer. You may find you like one for sex and another for masturbation. For example, I don not use anything for that when I am alone.

Lube is no substitute for spit.

Nice to hear what folks prefer in terms of lube. I've only used a couple, Astroglide and ID, and not sure I'm completely satisfied with either one. When I first purchased Astroglide, I made the mistake of buying it at a adult bookstore and payed way too much, only to find it at my local CVS for about half the price. As for ID, I agree that it tends to be a bit too sticky for my tastes.

So, if you're looking for Eros or one of the others recommended here, does anyone know where to find it at the best price from the internet or via mail order?

Thanks

RE: Latex Compatible

I have read that Astro Glide has the ability to kill germs. I lost the cite, so I cannot tell you where I read it. For a time, it was believed that lubes with Nonoxidol 9 (sp?) had that effect, but this apparantly has been disproved. Of course, no lube could be completely reliable in killing germs, but it is some additional protection.

Whoops

This may be be what you are talking about. It's a PRELIMINARY trial that indicated that Astroglide and two other lubricants offered some protection against HIV and putatively other germs.

There is also a certain amount of research going into microbicides, most of which unfortunately are still in the testing and development phases and are not readily available. They are generally for vaginal tranmission of STDS, primarily HIV, but rectal microbicides are finally being considered:

as well as

While generally a site largely concerning itself with HIV, Aegis is an excellent source for health related issues, particularly those related to safe sex, among gay men, including a great search engine and easy access to most of its content, including content from some scientific journals where you might otherwise be charged to view the material. Unfortunately, some of the material is highly technical and scientific but a great deal is meant for the lay person.

Will,

I've tried all the lubes mentioned. I like Eros, but it is ridiculously priced. Wet Platinum is great for masturbation, but isn't condom compatible. I've found ID Millennium to be quite similar to Eros, but it is much more reasonable pricewise.

I prefer KY Jelly in a tube for the initial lubeup for fucking and the ID Millennium if additional lubrication is necessary. Also, it doesn't have much of a taste, so it doesn't gross you out to suck someone who's lubed their cock up with it.

Among my family and friends, I'm known as someone who likes to try to get almost all the bells and whistles available on my phone service. So is it any surprise that my favorite lube makes itself look more hoohah by mentioning that it is the "Pheromone Formula". Wow! Complicated and scientific, huh? Also, I like the shape of the bottle. So I'm glad that some of the other "going in deep thinkers" have also mentioned Wet! Shows that it's not just my blond roots thinking for me.
