I watched a limited (six part) documentary series on Netflix that I thought was very, very good. It is a six part series that recounts "[a] boy's brutal murder and the public trials of his guardians and social workers." As the website states, the trials "prompt questions about system's protection of vulnerable children." The show is very difficult to watch at times but certainly makes you realize that our society must handle such cases in a much better way. For example, being quicker to respond to reports of abuse and taking quicker action when credible reports are made. It also highlighted how uncoordinated the various sections of government are when trying to keep children safe. One of the things that I found most interesting was the thread of homophobia that runs through the questions about his murder. Both regarding why the murder happened and how it could have been prevented to begin with (Gabriel's placement with his great-uncle).
